Start Your Day Right With Obentos' New Breakfast Menu

Now that Beijing's sweltering summer days are upon us, leaving our bodies screaming for light and healthy food, Obentos has heeded our call. After all, the Japanese inspired Grand Summit eatery has long been one of our go-to's for guilt-free fare. This summer they've upped the ante with a new seasonal menu rife with breakfast options to get you up and out in the morning.

One such example was Sabrina’s Scramble (RMB 42), an eye-catching plating of green and yellow with a generous helping of cushy scrambled eggs, roasted kale with a slight chili burn, and two slices of buttered sourdough bread for mopping.

Their Okayu congee (RMB 22) – a Japanese-style rice porridge – with its combination of brown rice, avocado, shredded carrot, kale, shiitake mushrooms, ginger, sesame seeds, and onion, made for a savory and filling side with a surprise. Floating just below the sprinkling of nori sits a poached egg; poke it and let the yolk slowly ooze into the congee, immediately brightening your day and thickening the soup.

Then came the huge oatmeal "power" bowl (RMB 32), each bite packed with diced apple, sliced banana, raisins, and ground nuts. A dash of honey, cacao powder, chia seeds, and cinnamon sweetened the oatmeal and boosted it to a wholesome take on wholesome apple pie perfect for pre- or post-workouts. A creamier option is the smoothie bowls (RMB 48), which will wake you up with their bright pink color even before your first bite of blended and fresh fruits, chia seeds, and nuts.

In all, the new Obentos breakfast items – available from 8-10.30am on weekdays and 9.30am-12.30pm on weekends and holidays – follow in line with the kitchen's usual well-thought-out options, making for filling, healthy, and delicious dishes that give us no excuse not to eat well.
