The craft beer movement took hold in the US in the 1980s. IPA was one of the many styles American brewers tried making and then adapted to make it their own. India Pale Ale soon evolved into two styles: the British IPA and the American IPA.

What are the differences between British IPA and American IPA?

Hops make the biggest difference. The aroma of a British IPA is slightly earthy, understated yet elegant, while American IPA boasts rich and distinct tropical fruit flavors and is a lot more unrestrained.

British IPA is rather conservative with its use of hops, which gives the beer a mild aroma and a low bitterness. The malt and yeast used also give it a richer and sweeter taste. American IPA, on the other hand, makes heavy use of hops, giving it its trademark bitterness, while the fermented yeast makes it cool and refreshing.

Goose Island IPA uses both American and British hops, which are grown around the northern 49-degree latitude at Elk Mountain Farm in Idaho. The inclusion of British hops gives the beer aromas of earth and resin, while American hops imbue it with a vivid profile. There is a strong aroma of hops when you open the bottle, followed by an intense citrusy flavor. The mouthfeel is refreshing, and there is a long, lingering aftertaste.
