‘Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains’ Enters Cannes Film Festival 

Directed by Gu Xiaogang, Chinese film Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains (春江水暖, also pictured at top) will be the closing film for International Critics’ Week at the 72nd Cannes Film Festival. The section welcomes first or second features and boasts a number of debuts which will be eligible for the Camera d’Or in 2019. Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains is Gu’s second feature film. His directorial debut is Planting for LifeDwelling in the Fuchun Mountains tells a story of four brothers who take care of their mother after her stroke and face tests of life. Their story unfolds over the course of the four seasons, as it would in an ancient Chinese scroll painting. This year, the Cannes Film Festival will open on May 14.

‘Climbers’ Starring Wu Jing and Zhang Ziyi Scores National Day Release

Based on true historical events of the historic 1960 frst-ever ascent of Mount Everest's north ridge by Chinese climbers Wang Fuzhou, Gonpo and Qu Yinhua, the film Climbers has been scheduled for release on September 30. Directed by Daniel Lee and starring Wu Jing, Zhang Ziyi, Zhang Yi, Hu Ge, and Jing Boran, the film is likely to be a box office hit during the National Day holiday week. The news was announced today at the Everest base camp, just after the final shot was filmed.

China Film Bureau to Loosen Restrictions on HK-mainland Co-productions

The China film bureau has updated five different policies regarding HK-mainland co-productions. The five policies are: 

  1. No restrictions on the number of Hong Kongers in participating in mainland film productions.
  2. No requirements on the percentage of actors and mainland-related elements in HK-mainland co-productions.
  3. No fees for registering co-production projects.
  4. Hong Kong films and filmmakers can apply for mainland film awards.
  5. Hong Kong film companies can apply for incentives for distributing and promoting excellent mainland productions and co-productions in Hong Kong, Macau, and overseas.

‘Avengers: Endgame’ Crosses RMB 300 Million Mark in China

As of late last Tuesday, Marvel’s superhero film Avengers: Endgame had already earned 334 million yuan in ticket sales, including more than 100 million yuan for its opening day, Apr 24. With these figures, it has now set the new record for reaching 100 million yuan mark the fastest in China. For the midnight shows on Apr 24, the film has grossed 94.06 million yuan, which is far ahead of the previous record 62.7 million yuan, set by Fast and Furious 8. It is worth noting that the film has occupied 99 percent of screening slots on Apr 24, though it may be because other films haven’t started selling advanced tickets.

Silver Lion Award-winning Film ‘Custody’ to Release in China

French domestic thriller Custody, which tells the story of a divorced couple who are fighting for custody of their son will be released in China through National Arthouse Cinema Alliance. The news was announced on Apr 15 at an arthouse film forum hosted by Beijing International Film Festival. The debut feature of French filmmaker Xavier Legrand, the film has been critically acclaimed around the world. Premiering at the Venice International Film Festival, it won the Silver Lion for Best Direction and has since received multiple awards and nominations from a variety of film festivals and awards, including Toronto International Film Festival, the National Board of Review, and César Award.
