Beijing News You Might Have Missed This Week, Dec 9

Beijing is a happening city! Don't miss a thing with our weekend roundup of the latest news.

Beijing Braces for a Temperature Tumble This Coming Weekend: As reported by the Beijing Meteorological Observatory, Beijing experienced a high of 10°C on Dec 7. Amid sporadic cold air, there was a slight warming trend, reaching its zenith on Dec 8, with the highest daytime temperature projected to be between 12℃ and 13℃. However, akin to a roller coaster ride, the temperature is set to plunge immediately following this short-lived warm spell. For Beijing, the influence of cold air will lead to a temperature drop starting on Saturday, Dec 9. The city is expected to endure a significant temperature drop, with the maximum temperature on Sunday dropping to around 1℃.

Beijing Grapples with Biodegradable Plastic Standard Issues: Beijing's regulatory committee has recently found that a significant number of "biodegradable" plastic bags did not meet the stipulated national and industry standards, reports China Dialogue. This includes parameters such as labeling, biodegradation rate, and carrying capacity. As a major contributor to single-use plastic waste globally, China launched an ambitious five-year plan in 2021. This plan focuses on significantly cutting down single-use plastics in sectors like retail, e-commerce, and express delivery by 2025. The strategy encourages the incorporation of eco-friendly alternatives, while also emphasizing the necessity of scientifically validating the effectiveness of biodegradable plastics.

Countdown to the Completion of the Beijing-Xiong'an Expressway: Construction is well underway on the final section of the Beijing-Xiong'an Expressway, spanning from the southern reaches of Beijing's Fifth Ring Road to the Sixth Ring Road, reports Ecns.cn. Its completion, slated for later this year, will drastically reduce travel times between Beijing and Hebei to a swift hour's journey. Once fully operational, the eight-lane bridge will facilitate heavy traffic flow, further reducing the travel time between Beijing and Xiongan to a mere 60 minutes – a full half-hour less than current travel times. Stretching 1.62 kilometers in length, the impressive structure boasts a main arch span of 300 meters, underscoring the scale and ambition of this infrastructural project.
