January 2011

Out Now - the Beijinger February 2011: She Can Do It!

If you didn't know that this month brings us the Year of the Rabbit then you soon will. This New Year's edition of the Beijinger brings you the Comical Misadventures of a Bunny in Beijing in our Cover Feature. We'd tell you more but you really have to see it for yourself. Imagine someone told you the story of your favorite comic book before you'd read it? Spoiler Alert: Kryptonite, a radioactive spider and it was Bruce Wayne all along. Exactly.

Elsewhere in the issue, we've more furry, hoppy things than you can shake a stick at in our Ecology Feature and a look at whether 2011 will be China's greenest year. We've found the way to happiness and it's meatless in our rabbit-friendly Dining Feature, we've thrown in a taste-off between Beijing's cream puffs and we tell you where to get authentic dandan mian. You'll also be introduced to the remarkable pianist Leon Fleischer, the man who might be the city's smartest bartender, what we think the Chinese Zodiac's High School Yearbook might look like and we've got the drop on The Drop. Plus, we've some ducks in the form of the Beijing Ducks water polo and we found out how hard it is to learn the tango.

Inside the magazine, or in those handy PDFs if you're so inclined, you'll also find the usual mix of new bars, restaurants and shops plus all of your old favorites like Ich Bin Ein Beijinger and Fashion 5-0. Get a copy of the February issue while you can or download the PDFs below.

Agenda Magazine - Yes We Can! (Jan13-Jan26)

The spirit of entrepreneurship is strong this year, and the latest Agenda, out at select locations around town, puts the spotlight on some of Beijing’s mommypreneurs, who run their business and their families with amazing grace. Cover model Yuliya Mavletbaeva talks about following your passion and taking a chance, and Mary Peng of ICVS talks about how to protect your pup (or cat) from unscrupulous gray market importers.

Not only that, but Carol Chow of CCSweets talks about balancing family and business as well as Western and Chinese tastes, Michelle Hemsin and Eyee Hsu of Counting Sheep talk about supporting businesses that you believe in, and Katy Sinnott shares how having a child finally made her organize her time.

If you’ve ever been curious about that not far, not close section of the city called Wangjing, Frank Zhang of Bei Shun Property Development fills us in on its many unknown charms and advantages, and as we suspect you’ll be so deeply involved with this issue that you won’t want to leave the house, Agenda’s provided you with a list of Beijing’s best home delivery services, baked goods and cheeses, as well as a list of the best Singaporean food in town and some beers to cool your palette. All this, plus our top picks for restaurants, night clubs, spas and shops, all in the latest issue of Agenda. Pick one up today!
