North Korean Film Screening and Koryo Tours Christmas Sale

Fans of all things North Korean will delight in the North Korean Film
Festival
, which is due to kick off this Sunday at around 6.30pm at Yugong Yishan. It starts with the charming football documentary, The Game of Their Lives, which tells the true story of the 1966 World Cup underdogs North Korea ousting the Italian favorites. Then at about 9pm there follows a screening of The Schoolgirl's Diary which shows the influx of Westernization through the eyes of a young North Korean girl. The night wraps up with a late screening of monster movie Pulgasari at about 11pm.

North Korea nuts will be pleased to hear that the fun doesn't stop there.
Koryo Tours, experts on all things North Korean, are currently holding a
Christmas Sale, which may help those those running low on inspiration for
Christmas presents. So, instead of sending home boxes of decorative kuaizi
and tacky Mao-morabilia, you can delight the folks back home with bizarre
trinketry from the DPRK.

Items currently on sale include books, DVDs, mugs, bags and T-shirts. Prices
range from the super cheap RMB 20 (for books, reduced down from RMB 100) to RMB 1,200 (for the hand-painted propaganda and film posters). Other items worth snapping up include oil paintings by students from Mansudae Art Studio in Pyongyang (the DPRK's artistic center of excellence). Prices start from EUR 100. For those on a bit more of a budget, the DVDs A State of Mind and Game of Their Lives are also on sale: RMB 160 for the pair (a saving of RMB 40 if bought individually). They're even offering a free gift of a postcard
set for anyone who drops by to peruse the goods. The sale will run until
Dec 20. Drop by the Koryo Tours offices (map here) or call 6416 7544 for
more information.
