Waiter There’s Yanjing in My Carlsberg! – Fake Beer Bust

Innovative home brewers lurking on Beijing’s outskirts have been doing their part to help limit alcohol’s nefarious effects by thoughtfully rebottling watery local brews as foreign brands, according to China Daily.

Last week the paper reported: “In a recent raid on a rented house in Wuliqiao village, officers found four men making counterfeit beer that they hoped to pass off as Budweiser, Corona and Carlsberg. The men were filling empty foreign beer bottles with Chinese beer and resealing them using a bottle-capping machine. Officers seized more than 10 boxes of adulterated beer. They said Chaoyang is known as a base of fake beer makers… According to Wei [Wei Jinsheng, head of the enforcement team], it is easy to pass off fake beer because many brands have a similar taste. ‘Some people add water to light beers, such as Corona, which is quite popular among women in bars,’ he said."

China Daily rang a couple of venues in Sanlitun, all of whom unsurprisingly denied stocking fake supplies. Chad Lager, owner of Fubar inside the East Gate of the Workers’ Stadium, commented: "Most of the bars do not try to make fake alcohols. At least the foreign bars I've dealt with. But sometimes an employee buys a bottle of fake Absolut, brings it to work and steals your bottle of real Absolut. Or, it could be delivery drivers or further down the chain.”

The situation could be worse – at least the producers of fake beer aren’t lacing their products with the melamine so beloved by many local dairy producers.

in the restaurant Amigo, which food quality is close to awful, they refill the Corona with Yanjing.

It's good thing I am not a beer drinker.... I rarely drink beer when it's really hot

I recommend home-brew. And if you had any surplus you could probably flog it to a local bar. Angel

Thanks for the post,

Normally I try not to have drinks in Sanlitun bars, I tried a few times and found out they were fakes, so what is next?? should we abstain from drinking alcohol in Beijing??
