2010 Jan 20 Show of Peace Lineup “Clarified”
Earlier this week we linked to a post on China Music Radar about the lineup at the Show of Peace concert scheduled for April 17 next to the Bird’s Nest. The post claimed that the management teams of Lady Gaga and Black Eyed Peas, acts supposedly confirmed for the concert, had stated they would not be appearing at the show. We also pointed out that Lady Gaga is scheduled to play at Yokohama Arena in Japan on April 17. After several approaches to ZZYX Entertainment, the company of promoter Rick Garson, we received a clarification statement this morning regarding the concert lineup.
The statement reads in part: “At the time of last week’s press conference, it was anticipated that Lady Gaga and Black Eyed Peas’ involvement in the Show of Peace Concert would be confirmed. Unfortunately, as often happens with music tours, schedules change, and currently Black Eyed Peas are not available to play live at the Show of Peace Concert on April 17. I apologize for making an announcement that implied the band’s commitment to the Show of Peace Concert. However, ZZYX Entertainment is currently discussing with Lady Gaga alternative logistics to try and accommodate their existing tour schedule and maintain the band’s involvement in the Show of Peace Concert. A further announcement will be made shortly.”
The Beijinger was at the press conference last week and can confirm there was no statement “implying” these acts would be involved – it was announced they were already confirmed.
ZZYX also denies the allegations made in the China Music Radar post that Lady Gaga know nothing about Rick Garson or his project: “It has been claimed by a blogger that the management of Lady Gaga have never heard of Rick Garson and the Show of Peace. This is completely untrue. We have been in detailed negotiations with the management of many global artists including Lady Gaga, whose management I have spoken to personally.”
Garson writes that he plans to announce “the next group of confirmed artists in mid February, just after the Chinese New Year holiday.”
The next group of artists? It’s still unclear who comprises the first group. Watch this space.

STOP PRESS: Show of Peace Postponed
Back in January we reported on the Show of Peace, announced with much fanfare (with the support of rock legend Jimmy Page), and supposedly scheduled for April 17 this year. Aside from a “clarification” issued by the organizers when theBeijinger.com and China Music Radar reported that one of the “confirmed” acts was actually playing in Japan the night of the concert, the promoters have been suspiciously quiet in recent weeks. So it was no surprise when we received a notice today stating the Show of Peace has been postponed until October.

However, I have summarized the piece.
Rick Garson’s journey for a global Peace Message started in 1999 with a random phone call from a representative of the Vatican who wanted him to make a Pope Poem book...blah blah...anyway...In June of 2001, Garson, while sitting in production meetings for other projects, leapt out of his chair. He had a feeling of urgency, but for what? The toilet? Some smack? No. It was an urgency for a Peace Message. That's right. It was vague, but it was urgent and it was something to do with Peace, yeah?
He checked the definition of Peace in the dictionary and decided that he could definitely, definitely embody it. His friends slowly backed away when he started yapping on about how he had coined the phrase, "Everyone wants to live in a world at Peace". He started to take passages from the Pope's writings and set out to get some of the biggest names in the entertainment industry to read out the words of the Pope, as a Message of Peace.
None of these stars were well known for their interest in geopolitical issues, but they were known to people everywhere who read Hello! magazine and they knew, most of them, how to spell Peace.
Basically he tried and failed and tried and failed to stage it a million times for the next 8 yrs. He even tried Rome, where the Mayor of Rome wanted to be given a crown and be known as the Mayor of Peace. It still fell through.
On a visit to China he became inspired by a sign in a toilet advising him that washing his hands will help build a harmonious society. But what really did it was the Beijing Olympic's empty 'One World, One dream' message. Not being deterred by the recent unrest in Tibet and with backing from CCTV, Rick decided China was where his gimpy little concert would finally take place, with Jimmy Page helping him send out a whole lotta Peace, yeah?
