The Beijinger 2010 Charity Super Quiz: Almost RMB 30,000 Raised … and Still Counting

The Beijinger 2010 Charity Super Quiz took place at Hard Rock Café last Sunday (December 5), raising an impressive RMB 29,800 so far for Ping An Medical Foster Home. With a number of the participating venues pledging to add to that tally with post-quiz donations, the grand total should break the RMB 30,000 mark – not bad for four hours of pub quizzing on a Sunday evening.

All donations from the 2010 Charity Super Quiz will go towards helping the work of Ping An Medical Foster Home, a home offering care for children in need of surgery for disabilities, birth defects and other serious conditions. Thanks to all who put their hands into their pockets and donated, some of those children will get the treatments they need – you may even help to save a life.

Close to 150 people filled Hard Rock Café on Sunday to take up the potent trivia challenge of seven rounds of questions laid down by the city’s top quizmasters. Representing Kro’s Nest (set to open on Xiaoyun Lu around Christmas), Jim Kirchhoff and Anthony Tao hosted a viral video round; Julian Fisher of Tim’s Texas Bar-B-Q tested the teams on Scandinavian music; Graham Forbes of The Irish Volunteer got heads scratching with a round of cryptic band names; Josh Lally of Lush hosted an entertainment connections round; The Stumble Inn’s Robbie Hennebry threw a curveball with his sports round; Karl Long of Paddy O’Shea’s fooled a few teams with his general knowledge wipeout round; and The Bookworm’s Jonathan White concluded the quizzing with a music round, ably aided and abetted by Hard Rock Café’s house band, Hurricane.

After a tightly fought contest involving close to 30 teams, The Stepdads emerged as the outright winners, with each member taking home a Charity Super Quiz statuette and a bottle of Dalmore single malt.

Of the total RMB 29,800 raised so far for Ping An Medical Foster Home, here’s a breakdown of where the money came from.
RMB 7,300: takings from mandatory RMB 50 donation per person upon entry
RMB 7,300: pledged donation from The Stumble Inn
RMB 7,300: pledged donation from Paddy O’Shea’s
RMB 3,800: personal donations from Hard Rock Café GM Jimmy Hoon and Simon Cockerell of Koryo Tours
RMB 3,000: pledged donation from Kro’s Nest
RMB 1,000: pledged donation from The Irish Volunteer
RMB 100: extra audience donation

The Beijinger would like to thank Jimmy Hoon, Katherine Tan and the management and staff of Hard Rock Café for hosting the event; quizmasters Anthony Tao, Jim Kirchhoff, Julian Fisher, Graham Forbes, Josh Lally, Robbie Hennebry, Karl Long and Jonathan White; partner venues Kro’s Nest, Tim’s Texas Bar-B-Q, The Irish Volunteer, Lush, The Stumble Inn, Paddy O’Shea’s and The Bookworm for offering up both their quizmasters and prizes; sponsors Oriental Taipan, Grand Marnier, Branded Spirits Ltd., Stella Artois, and The Taj; all those who volunteered on the night; and last but not least, everyone who turned out on a cold night and made a donation towards supporting the very worthy cause of Ping An Medical Foster Home.
