Besides professional cuticle care, what do you want from a nail salon? I’ve never felt compelled to consider this, but if your answer is “Cocktails, coffee and pizza,” you’ll love Frost.
Restaurant wizard Jeff Powell and wife Sheri have moved this nail salon just meters from its original location to accommodate a bar and a few tables. A tasteful beer selection includes Belgian beers and American craft brews. Try the coffee-tinged Old No. 38 Stout, or drink San Miguel (RMB 18) if you’re on a budget.
The cocktail list favors sweeter drinks like the Appletini and Chocolate Martini (RMB 48), with the signature Frosty Nails (RMB 55) delivering a rush of melon, coconut and pineapple, disguising a well-liquored base. If you’re peckish, there are cupcakes from Lollipop Bakery, and Gung Ho! deliveries are just a phone call away. Manicures from RMB 30, massage from RMB 80.

This wine and cheese bar is another sign of changing times at Chaoyangmen. The Gramercy’s 18 wines by the glass average RMB 30-50, with highly drinkable Portuguese reds at the lower end of that scale. However, with bottles from only RMB 140, by-the-glass hardly matters.
Red House: Cheap Beers Near Sanlitun
Readers who live in Wudaokou will already be familiar with this pizza-and-beer bar. Now they’ve opened near Sanlitun, where comparisons with The Tree seem more obvious than ever. The very thin-crust pizzas (RMB 50-70) do the job, but there are better choices in Sanlitun.
Mussels and Belgian Beers at Brussels
It’s hard to predict this Belgian-inspired bar’s destiny. It’s not in the best location for walk-ins, but with First Floor now regularly overcrowded, there’s room for a bar offering a similar blend of pretense-free fun and decent drinks. The question is whether Brussels is that bar.
