2012 Oct 11 Malty Dog Opens on Beiluogu Xiang

The latest player in the Beijing suds game is Malty Dog Bar & Brewery. They'll start tapping the kegs and popping open the bottles at their opening party this Friday, October 12.

The man behind this latest Beiluogu Xiang project is Jeff Ji of Mai Bar, which is situated at the top of the same lane. In this new venue, he's trading in the cocktails and shakers for beers and brewing equipment

If the name didn't already make it clear, this bar will focus on all things malted. Fridges are stocked with a wide range of imported beers, a number Jeff hopes will eventually top a hundred. Taps at the bar will dispense local craft ales brewed by Jeff and other Beijing brewers. Some of Jeff's own beers will include a Belgium Wheat, a honey lemon basil ale, an espresso stout and a spiced ale called "Christmas in July." Rounding out the tipple choices are a shelf of single malt scotch and bourbons.

Malty Dog Bar & Brewery. Tue-Fri 6pm-midnight Sat-Sun 1pm-midnight. 51 Beiluogu Xiang, Dongcheng District (no tel) 东城区北锣鼓巷51号

Re: Malty Dog Opens on Beiluogu Xiang

honey lemon basil ale sounds f***ing disgusting. This craft beer BS has gone too far.

Re: Malty Dog Opens on Beiluogu Xiang

Wow, they could have at least come up with their own name rather than ripping off of one of Slow Boat's ales. (Malty Dog Red Ale)
I guess imitation is the highest form of flattery in this case?

Stolen Business Name and Log

The logo and business name are a direct rip off of a trademarked logo in the United States.

Re: Malty Dog Opens on Beiluogu Xiang

Wow, that's even worse than ripping off the name of one of Slow Boat's brews.
They even stole the logo from someone else? Come on, be original!

Re: Malty Dog Opens on Beiluogu Xiang

For those that don't know Jeff Ji's (owner of Mai bar and Malty Dog) history, he started out at the Apothecary and worked just a few weeks before ripping off the recipes and starting Mai bar with an almost identical drink menu. Not satisfied with the depths of his morality, he stole the name of his bar from Slow Boat's "Malty Dog Red Ale". Afterwards he Google'd the name and ripped off the logo from an unsuspecting brewery in Michigan.

If you're that hard up for a decent cocktail go to Mao Mao Chong or Glen or Ichikura or Apothecary instead.

Don't support these thieves!

  • Malt Reality: Beiluogu Xiang's Bar & Brewery

Malt’s the name of the game at Malty Dog Bar & Brewery, where dimmed lightbulbs, wooden furnishings and an exposed brick bar finally gives beer the type of venue that has more often been reserved for wines and top-shelf cocktails (like Mai Bar, another project by owner Jeff Ji). This will cheer anyone who’s looking for a quiet spot to sip and savor a craft brew, bottled beer or tumbler of whiskey (neat or on the rocks).
