Red Ribbon: World AIDS Day

Please wear a red ribbon today.

December 1 is World AIDS day, and as our thoughts turn to AIDS victims and their families around the world, we were shocked to learn that in the last year 48,000 people in China were infected with HIV. We encourage everyone to learn more about the epidemic and join us in helping to raise awareness.

Danwei.com reports that the Chinese media was busy yesterday educating the public about AIDS with mixed messages and shocking headlines like "Every day face-to-face with AIDS patients, see how fearless they are." These stories focus on the "threats" AIDS workers in China face and make AIDS patients seem dangerous. Unfortunately, these sensationalist Chinese media reports tend to do more harm than good.

To get the whole scoop on AIDS and how it affects us, see our interview with Dr. Jane Eason of Beijing United Family Hospital on p50 of our December issue.
