Living La Vida Local: Beauty Queens, Masturbation, Cleavers and Santacon

Nice work, boys. Shanghaiist reports that a masturbation contest was held in Shenzhen to raise awareness for World AIDS Day. From the video we don’t see much of a competition, probably a good thing, but we are happy to see this kind of openness in our communities.

While the guys got off for AIDS in Shenzhen, we were honored to meet with Miss World Yu Wenxia at the Hilton Beijing Christmas tree lighting. She will likely be teaming up with the Jane Goodall Institute’s Roots and Shoots program. The beauty queen is concerned with issues like migrant worker children and the rabies epidemic, which is still a number one killer in Asia.

She also stated, “I am a pine tree,” when we asked what type of foliage she hoped to be. And she would be “Miss Healthy” if she could be anything else. Cute.

In more urgent news, New Life Center is looking to raise RMB 80,000 by December 22 to give the displaced children they care for a new residence. A new home for Christmas isn’t a bad gift at all. Don’t be a humbug and help these kids out with a donation please.

Community events coming to you this week:

On Wednesday, The Hutong will be teaching you how to use a cleaver and on Thursday the tree lights go on at JW Marriott. You can also pick up a tree of your own this week at The International School of Beijing.

On Saturday, head to Zajia with your SLR camera for some basic photography tips from Luma Lu and then go take wild pictures of Santacon.

On Sunday, the places to be are our very own Charity Super Quiz and the Bookworm, where there will be a live performance of A Charlie Brown Christmas. Exciting! We hope more venues get the cue and all our favorite Christmas cartoons will be shown in Beijing this year. Modernista, Zajia, our sights are set on you.

We leave you with Christmas entertainment of our own this morning. Watch this video of a Beijing Santa getting his beard stuck in mid-air.
