2013 Feb 12 Rock Off: Visiting Musicians To Need College Degrees?

It's good news for fans of the Chemical Brothers and Alt-J but bad news for fans of pretty much every other musician ever. According to an article in the Guardian, Chinese authorities have considered a ban on all foreign musicians who do not hold a university degree.

The debate followed the recent dedication of one portly English pop star's Beijing concert to a similarly-proportioned local artist. The Rocket Man is no rocket scientist, so he would not have made the college-educated cut. The proposed policy would also put paid to Icelandic singers who mention a particular place that, erm, sounds very similar to the reason most people visit Macau.

Anyway, the good news is that we can expect to see much smarter visiting acts from now on. Which baccalaureate-holding musical acts would you want to see perform in China? Let us know in the comments below. We're off to find out if The Three Degrees qualify.

Re: Rock Off: Visiting Musicians To Need College Degrees?

why do some singers have to be such whiny bellends? could they not leave sad, 'radical' statements to politicians and teenagers and just get on with doing the thing that people have actually paid to see them do?

Re: Rock Off: Visiting Musicians To Need College Degrees?

No biggie, Luda's gonna get here on an f-visa next time then.

But yeah, with the VPN thing, the new regulations, etc... It seems harbin 2 is coming together.

mao money, mao problems

Re: Rock Off: Visiting Musicians To Need College Degrees?

Putting aside the locals interest in possibly diversifying their musical/cultural interests, there are over 300,000 expats in Beijing alone. With all of the hard work they do for this city and the amount of revenue that is generated from their industrious efforts wouldnt it be a nice gesture to encourage western style entertainment so that these people away from home have something to enjoy in their free time? Why make it all so difficult....

This shit is adolescent.

Re: Rock Off: Visiting Musicians To Need College Degrees?

Business as usual..an unfounded operation ordained by the corrupt elite.

F##k this country..and this dirty s##thole megalopolis.

Re: Rock Off: Visiting Musicians To Need College Degrees?

yay!!!! John Legend concert then?

STILL I RISE...

Re: Rock Off: Visiting Musicians To Need College Degrees?

All this proposal says to me is "The ONLY foreigners we want are wealthy businessmen, embassy folk and investors and we will go out of our way to make things difficult for any foreigner who wants to turn a profit inside of China". This includes foreign teachers and entertainers from abroad. The only people who actually like foreigners in this country are the women!

or is it?

Re: Rock Off: Visiting Musicians To Need College Degrees?

I Agree

Re: Rock Off: Visiting Musicians To Need College Degrees?

I meant to say that I agree with TRUCULENT.

Ban video game consoles, cool websites, foreign acts without college degrees (come on). Just take away everybody's fun, so all we can do is eat (which is all the locals do, basically)

If this is true then our home countries shall do the same to visiting Chinese.

Re: Rock Off: Visiting Musicians To Need College Degrees?

Not being funny but look at the calibre of what the local authorities allow without a potential ban!
Can you see Green Day heading this way during their summer '13 tour , yeah no frickin way.
The censors here remind me of the three brass monkeys.......

Does this really look like the face of concern?

  • BeijingDaze: Full Midi 2013 Information - Camping, Transport, Hotels and More

Our friend and colleague @BeijingDaze has the ultimate Midi post with everything you need to know for the big show:

MIDI is arranging a bus for festival-goers: It will be in the public square just outside the A exit of Beitucheng stop on subway line 8/10 (across from the Bird’s Nest Olympic Stadium). The shuttle service starts at 9:00am and will run every half hour until 2:00pm. The return trips start at 8:00pm, running every half hour until 11:30pm. The trip will cost you 20rmb each way and will take about 1.5 hours in either direction.

The good folks from SmartBeijing also have this to add: Alternately, you can take the 852 express bus from the Dongzhimen bus station. That will cost 15rmb and will take about an hour to drop you off at Shiji Guangchang (世纪广场站), the big public square in Pinggu. From there head to the southwest corner of the square, where you can buy a MIDI ticket (if you haven’t already) and, ticket in hand, jump on a free shuttle to the festival grounds. To get back to Beijing, you can take the free shuttle back to the public square and get back on the 852. Be aware that the Beijing-bound 852 stops running at 6:30pm, so if you want to stay out later than that you’re pretty much limited to the MIDI bus (or staying the night in Pinggu).

Another option is to book yourself in hotel for the duration of the festival. These are telephone numbers for hotels located in the town of Sanhe ca 12Km from the venue, there are plenty of 4 seater (motor) rickshaws and it’s 30 RMB per rickshaw to get to the venue one way.

  • will.i.am Concert Date Set

The will.i.am concert rumored to be in the works since this summer has finally been set. The show, to benefit and raise awareness for the 100,000 Strong Initiative, will take place on Saturday, December 17. The Black Eyed Peas singer will be joined in Beijing by fellow bandmate apl.de.ap, the Bucky Johnson Band and singer-songwriter John Legend.

  • Aching for Akon: the Man Himself in Concert

This November, the Beijinger took it upon ourselves to attempt a world record or two. Our valiant efforts (read all about them here on issuu.com) sadly fell short - but then again, we never tried enlisting the assistance of Akon. Last night (Nov 4) at Mastercard Arena, Akon proved just how easily he could rock a stadium and set a number of somewhat kooky world records*.

World Record #1: number of Chinese people simultaneously screaming "ghetto"

  • Still In The Game: Here's Your Yellowcard

High school is long gone, but who says we no longer need to hear the bitter love songs of nerd boys? With their catchy lyrics and maverick violin, Yellowcard broke out in the middle of the last wave of pop-punk. After a two year hiatus, they’re back and they’re riding the genre’s next wave.

  • Superstars Coming To Beijing: Westlife, Will.i.am & Eminem (maybe)

In case you didn’t read this article from CNN, Will.i.am is coming to play in Beijing, in a concert with other US and Chinese pop stars, which will be organized by Americans Promoting Study Abroad. According to the rapper from Black Eyed Peas, they want to help American kids to “become responsible global citizens” and let more of them to “have the opportunity to study and travel abroad.” Coming along to kick it with Will is none other than Hillary Clinton. Word.
