New Thai Spot from Susu's Amy Li

The city certainly could stand for more Southeast Asian cuisine and apparently, Amy Li of Susu agrees. On June 17, she will be soft-opening her new spot for Thai in the Daimler Tower next to Annie’s at Lei Shin Hong in Wangjing. Much like Susu is named after a Vietnamese squash, Li’s new restaurant will be called Pak Pak after the Thai word for water morning glory (or kongxincai 空心菜, if that is more familiar to you).

Li describes the venture as “Susu’s cousin restaurant,” saying that it will be similar in price, style and design to the well-loved Vietnamese hutong haunt, despite the slightly different constellation of partners who are behind Pak Pak. The kitchen will be taking a simple and straight-forward approach to authentic dishes with a focus on southern Thai cuisine.

Recently ranked at number 13 of the 101 Best Restaurants in Asia, Susu has been a big figure in pushing the level of hutong dining higher in the past two years. Wangjing should only hope that it will be so lucky.

Hi 8848,

While I can see your point on authentic, I do think that's a bit narrow of a definition. It's the approach Li has indicated her kitchen will be taking and as this is not a review nor has the restaurant open yet, that has yet to be judged.

As for the awards for Purple Haze, you'll have to take this up with your fellow Beijing diners as our Restaurant Awards are judged entirely by reader voting (with the exception of Editors' Picks).

If you do have any suggestions for Thai in Beijing, it would be great if you would share what you like best or any hidden gems.

Thanks for your attention and comments.
Sincerely,
Cat

Thanks for pointing that out! We made the correction.

^ Hi Mr/Ms Thailand: Which places in Beijing serve truly authentic thai food, in your opinion?

Books by current and former Beijinger staffers

1) water morning glory in thai is not "pak pak" its pak-boong
2) beijinger, please stop reviewing or introducing non authentic thai food and calling it authentic. Purple haze is the worse tasting so-called thai restaurant, but apparently got handful awards for best thai restaurants. ( i ordered table full of food and walked out, that bad)
3) its only thai if its made by a thai

Sincerely,

Thai born and bred
