Reports: Two Dead, Including Foreigner, in Joy City Chaoyang Stabbings

A Chinese citizen and a foreign national were stabbed to death around 5pm Wednesday outside the Joy City Chaoyang shopping mall Qingnian Lu by a 27-year-old man identifying himself as mentally ill, China Daily and Beijing Cream reported. [Warning: Beijing Cream's report has graphic photos of the crime scene.]

The victims were not identified, nor was the nationality of the foreigner released, although the foreign national was identified as female. Joy City (Da Yue Cheng) complex is popular entertainment and shopping destination for east Fourth Ring Road residents. The Line 6 Qingnian Lu Station is also directly across the street from the mall.

The alleged perpetrator gave his surname as Xiao, indicated that he is from Yishui County in Shandong province, and claimed that he is mentally ill.

The incident occurs a year to the week after American Howard Thomas Mills was stabbed to death at Qianmen, on July 12, 2012, continuing a string of attacks directed at foreigners last summer. The early days of the 2008 Olympic Games were marred when Todd Bachman, father-in-law of the US men's volleyball coach, was stabbed to death at the Drum Tower on August 9, 2008. His wife, Barbara, survived the attack.

Mentally ill my arse. Are foreigners getting 'stabbed up' rare in China?

I sincerely hope so as one of my friends was stabbed by a cowardly gang of Chinese also. Luckily for him it was in his leg.

God wears flares

There have been many incidents in that area which is why I said its bad. If there were only one I wouldn't have written that. The fact is there's been robberies and stabbings going on for a year or so now.

In news stories like this in this country, I've noticed that "mentally ill" is the catch-all term for anything awful that's outside the social norm. "Mentally ill" is defined by extrapolation from the circumstance, not by any physician/psychologist, as in "he did such a horrible thing, so of course he was mentally ill". It's a nice way to reassure the public that there aren't xenophobic mass murderers running around--this guy was "just mentally ill", so of course this is merely an anomaly. "Everyone just carry on with your normal lives; most of us aren't mentally ill, so nothing to be worried about."

Areas can not be bad, people are!
If that guy is ""mentally ill""
then he shound not run around in public in the first place!
Stabbing a girl, how brave!

Not everyone who is 'mentally ill' is violent or deserves to be locked up. These incidents often involve people who are said to be mentaly ill but rarely are specifics given as to their illness. The sad result is that it just makes people afraid of all people with mental illnesses.

Come on. This area is no less different than Shuangjing. In fact, it's probably less of a mess than Shuangjing. Regardless, I hope this is followed through so we understand what exactly was going through his head. All too often, risk of falling into a black hole and disappearing completely.

Funny how each time foreign nationals are attacked the perpetrators claim "mental incapacity",seems to be as popular as "diplomatic immunity" B-)

Does this really look like the face of concern?
