Capital Bites: Cupcake Class, New Pinotage Space and Two-For-One Wine

The holiday has quickly come and gone, which makes me feel like I never left the office. Luckily, I have a few sweet reminders of the fact that, over the past week, I managed to test run a new cupcake class Colibri Cafe will be starting, led by Opposite House's head pastry chef, Franck Istel.

Istel is a pleasure to simply chill with, but beyond that, he imparts his knowledge from years in the trade, providing tips for creating the batter for Colibri's signature indulgence. It was a lot of fun, and I came out with some delectable treats. I didn't even have to do the dishes, which is a big plus in my book.

Colibri is still working out the details for the class, but I'll have more on that when they have it finalized.

Starting today, order food from The Local online from Sherpa's and have it delivered to your door. Unfortunately, this doesn't apply to cocktails or draft beer. A discovery last week: the tempura broccoli Parmesan sandwich. It's a true delight, and I haven't seen anything like it elsewhere in Beijing. It might not deliver well, but it's definitely worth giving a go next time you're in house there. Burgers are probably a better candidate for travel.

The orginal Pinotage in Shunyi has moved into a sprawling space just north of the Sunhe subway station (line 15) and past the Beidong flower market. The address is inside of Chuangyi Yuan, 3A Shunhuang Lu, Sunhe Township, Chaoyang District. Call 8459 5868 if that's not direction enough.

Besides the restaurant, the new space allows Pinotage to develop what they are calling "Pinotage Plaza," which includes a deli counter with fresh bread daily, meats, cheese, cakes and other products, as well as an area for a coffeeshop, a sports bar and a play area for children.

Newly opened Italian fine dining spot from the brothers behind LMPlus and L'Isola, Bantu is having an October wine promotion. For select bottles, buy one and get one free. This includes Inycon Pinot Grigro Chardonnay 2012, Piemonte Cortese Cantina Casorzo 2011, and Bantu Cannonau di Sardegna 2011. If you're not feeling like getting sloshed, the deal still applies to those who prefer taking the second bottle home.

This Friday and Saturday, October 11 and 12, Temple Restaurant Beijing will be hosting Michelin One-Star Chef Guillaume Galliot. French in orgin, he's been around Asia since age 24, most recently earning his star last year at The Tasting Room in Macau. Galliot will be preparing a five-course lunch with wine parings (RMB 588 plus 15 percent) on Friday and then, on Saturday evening, a five-course dinner also with wine pairings (RMB 888 plus 15 percent). RSVP by email or phone (8400 2232).

Lastly, in grocery news, the Jenny Lou's in Jianwai Soho will be closing temporarily for renovations. We're not sure on the exact time frame, but when we hear more, we'll let you know.
