Haze Over and Out: CBD Night Spot Closes Doors for the Last Time

At the end of a long night of electro pumping this past weekend, the DJ took the mic and announced that CBD club Haze would be closing permamently and that Friday night's party, the club's Second Anniversary bash, would be the last. No drawn-out goodbye (although rumors had swirled for awhile since the "refurbishment" a couple of months ago) and no huge closing bash to see it off. Just a short, sharp closure for one of the city's most popular clubs of the last two years. So the Beijing electro scene loses one of its forerunning establishments at a stroke. We wanted to know why, so we called up Haze resident DJ and old friend of the Beijinger Pancake Lee to shed some light.

When is Haze going to close?
"It's closed already. The last night was Friday (November 1)."

Why did you close up? We loved it!
"What Haze represented was never – and never would be – a mainstream culture. We all know that what places like Haze represent is a bubble. Beautiful as it is, it's gonna blow up and vanish eventually. You know the club business; they come and go. The entertainment business in Beijing has been on a downward curve for the last couple of years. It's been pretty tough for us for a while."

We're gonna miss Haze. Is this really the end, or have you got other plans for the Haze brand?
"We're going to continue the Haze brand for sure. We'll continue to be the Haze crew, and we'll continue to do the things we love, and you know what? We'll be even better. We're going to continue to host Haze events, not only in Beijing, but also in Shanghai and, potentially, other big cities in China. We're planning a wave of events across a number of cities!"

That's good. Anything in particular coming soon?
"There will be something special coming very soon. This event will be like any of our events in the past – mysterious and exciting. All I can tell you for now is that we will host one of our '50 Shades of Haze' nights early next month."
