Film Director Wang Quan'an Nabbed for Soliciting Sex

Famous for films like Tuya's Wedding (2006 winner of Golden Bear Prize) and the historical drama White Deer Plain, director Wang Quan'an has been detained by Beijing police on charges of soliciting sex. He was caught in the company of a sex worker in Dongcheng district on Sept 10. Authorities reported that he had used the service for three nights in a row, paying RMB 800 for each visit.

A graduate of the Beijing Film Academy, Wang is a leading figure of the sixth generation of mainland directors and gained fame for his emotional societal dramas based on rural life in China. His wife, actress Zhang Yuqi, was attending New York's fashion week at the time of the arrest.

China's entertainment industry has been bearing the brunt of a nationwide crackdown on illicit activity, leading to a handful of high profile arrests of celebrities involved in gambling, prostitution, and drug abuse. Many companies in the media industry have also agreed to blacklist any celebrity involved in these illicit activities.
