Beijing Issues Blue Pollution Alert for Wednesday, Thursday

Beijing issued a blue alert  its lowest-level such public announcement on Wednesday afternoon for both that day and Thursday, as pollution levels soared above Air Quality Index 400 in the early hours of Thursday morning, state media reported.

The alert was triggered when PM 2.5 levels reached 348 because of "regional pollution and unfavorable weather conditions," the reports said.

Along with staying indoors if possible and wearing masks when venturing outside, the reports provided the following advice: "Children, the elderly and those who suffer respiratory and cardio-cerebrovascular diseases are urged to reduce outdoor activity."

The pollution is expected to dissipate Thursday night as colder weather is forecast.
