What 'The New Black' is in China Travel; Howdy Texas, as American Begins Dallas-Beijing Flights

We like to think we do a good job here at the Talking Travel desk, but sometimes you just have to tip your hat to someone who is doing it better.

In our last edition of this fine column, we said in the headline, "Opening Exit Doors Now a Trend." On Monday, The Wall Street Journal topped us: "Forget Louis Vuitton handbags, air rage is the new black in China." Well done, Colum Murphy: you just won chun yun (Spring Festival travel) coverage for 2015. Read his six tips for surviving the annual migration here.

The proliferation of flights out of Beijing to destinations across the globe is really amazing. The latest is American Airlines, which is beginning non-stop service from Dallas/F.t Worth to Beijing. This is a big thing. United flies Houston to Beijing (an old Continental Airlines route), but that's via Newark. Most travelers in the American Southwest are forced to connect via Los Angeles or San Francisco. Non-stop flights out of Dallas just gave a whole bunch of people in the central southern United States access to shorter travel to Beijing. We're hoping for some sort of cowboy-hatted launch celebration here in the capital, but no invitaiton so far. Flights begin May 7, but reservations and booking are already available.

Unless they cancelled it, Air China has a direct Houston-Beijing route. The last time I priced it, it was 2000 USD, and a 14 hour flight, so I passed it up in favor of another airline with better prices and better service.
