EAT: The Hutong's Cookie Monster Bake-Off and Obentos Smoothies

Cookie fans should get down to The Hutong this Saturday for the Cookie Monster Charity Bake-Off, where 20 of Beijing's best bakers will go head-to-head for the cookie crown. Last year's winner, Jon Ellis, has since gone on to set up his own company, Big Bear Baked Goods, so the winner has big shoes to fill. The RMB 150 entry fee gets you a taste of all 20 cookies plus a hot drink provided by The Hutong. Don't worry if a bite isn't enough all the participants will be selling bags of five cookies for RMB 20, RMB 5 of which will go to The Hutong's chosen charity, BEAM. A portion of the entry fee and 100 percent of raffle ticket sales (prizes include The Hutong recipe books, restaurant vouchers and a three day juice cleanse from Juice by Melissa) will also go to Bethel China.

On a healthier note, Obentos are now offering six different energy boosting smoothies at their Central Park store. There are four coconut water-based smoothies for dairy-free drinkers, and two dairy-based smoothies sweetened with honey. We love the sound of the Avo Smoothie, with coconut water, avocado, pineapple, and apple. A small smoothie costs RMB 34 and a large costs RMB 42.
