First Glance: Haven, Houhai

New Houhai-based bar Haven has brought a certain level of class back to this tourist-trodden area, even having only been open for a week. It has also become the first ever Houhai bar that I have gone to on more than one separate occasion, and not wanted to gauge my eyes out. There are no women on poles, no overpriced Qingdao beers, no sad guitar soloists. What you can expect are a whole lot of good cocktails, beers, wines, pizzas, and an amazing view.

With its modern, sleek design, Haven has good seating both inside and outside depending on whether you prefer things chilly (the air conditioning downstairs is simply divine) or alfresco. Both spaces have large windows and doors so as not to cut you off from the lake outside.

That being said, it is the upstairs seating that is the main attraction and acts as a reminder of why people enjoy visiting Houhai  the view is incredible, with the terrace situated the perfect distance away from absolute mayhem. It's like watching a car crash from the safety of the stands.

Anyway, to the drinks. The drinks are carefully put together and showcase innovative combinations, such as their basil and pineapple mojito (RMB 50), or a more zingy and rummy take on the traditional Mai Tai (RMB 30 this week). Every week management will introduce three new cocktails to the menu, which will each be available at RMB 30 until they join the regular menu at regular prices the week after. This week, RMB 30 can also get you a lemon-thyme collins, or a chocolate cherry Manhattan.

If you're not staying for the cocktails, then consider stuffing your face with a pizza, which go for RMB 50 and up and are truly delicious generously topped with salami, mushrooms, olives, and cheese, depending on your pizza of choice. Crusts are chewy and not too thick, and the taste of real cheese is always welcomed. The owners promise us that there are more food options coming our way soon.

There were a few instances whereby drinks that were ordered arrived in in five-minute increments but this something likely to be ironed out as the bar grows.

If you're looking for an excuse to go, Haven are hosting the Beijing-based film directed by Australian Em Jaay, Beijing Being, on August 8. The bar will open at 5pm, the screening will commence at 8pm, and there's a suggested donation of RMB 100 to help get Beijing Being to the Montreal Film Festival.
