Chinese Government Encourages 2.5-Day Weekend to Promote Travel

In order to boost tourism within China, the Chinese government has encouraged a 2.5-day weekend, and a 4.5-day work week, China News reports.

The document titled "Several Decisions on Further Promoting Tourism-related Investment and Consumption" reads that employers could arrange flexible working schedules, letting weekends begin Friday at noon instead of Friday evening.

Netizens are calling for this rule to be implemented instantly, but no information is available yet as to how this would work, and whether it would work. The extra half day would supposedly be paid, as China Daily mentions that the guideline indicates a push towards the implementation of paid vacation rules and encouraging people to take their leave.

Honestly, we doubt whether this is going to happen and whether it will lead to people traveling more, as an extra Friday afternoon would just be perfect to add to Friday celebrations. Or, this elongated weekend would leave plenty of time to go to Cuandixia on a Friday and spend the evening there, go to Beidaihe, or embark on a different day trip. And thanks a lot for announcing this mid-way through August, instead of, oh, we don't know, April.
