Yishu 8 New Exhibition: 'Anatomy of a Creative Path' by VAL; 'Armilla' by Simon Rulquin Open Dec 8

We got a sneak peak of the new exhibtitions that have opened in Yishu 8Anatomy of a Creative Path by VAL as well as Simon Hulquin's Armilla. The gallery is not far from the National Art Museum, and is worth a visit if you haven't been yet.

Simon Rulquin, born in Bordeaux in 1982, was granted the Yishu 8 prize in 2015, following successful group exhibitions in Shanghai and Paris through 2013 and 2014. His show at Yishu 8 is inspired by his passion in astronomy and his childhood memories, leaving out traditional paint brushes and embracing freely flowing paint and gravity (picture above).

VAL, on the other hand, spent her youth and adolescence shuttling between South America, Africa, and Europe, experimenting with clay for the first time in 2001. In 2004 she set up her workshop in Bangkok, where she still lives with her own team to assist her in the creation of her sculptures which have taken monumental proportions.

VAL says:

"My creations are a mirror of what my conscience feels and is not yet receiving. Sculpture is my first step in language, which gives it, a universal character. No need for a particular cultural background to interact with the work. The words may come after, and are not necessary to the understanding of the work.

A perception of time and space with variable dimension guide my work since its inception. I represent the man in relation to space. When I say the man, I mean you, me, it's a universal man. My work on attitudes allows me to express a range of what constitutes our humanity in our attempt to make sense of our lives, to follow our path, to hope, to love, to observe, to amaze, to meditate, to wait, to dance, to walk ...

I represent this man or these men in relation to a space made up of solids and voids, open architectures, windows, paths, a set of lines with their own energy and assembled according to a particular rhythm which makes us realized a possible infinite time and space.”

Her relationship with China is not new, she has a long-term relationship with the Philippe Staib Gallery, which is well-established in the Chinese market. Her work her been presented throughout the country, and is sensitive to Chinese and Asian culture.

Yishu 8 opens on December 8, the exhibition by VAL runs until January 10, and the exhibition by Simon Hulquin runs until December 20.
