Cui Jian Releases 14-Minute Video for "Outside Girl"
China's Godfather of Rock, Cui Jian, has released a 14-minute music video for his English-language song "Outside Girl," first performed in 2007.
The video is more short film than music video. Written and directed by Cui, it was posted by Sony Music China, with whom he signed earlier this year. Between the song's debut and the video's release Monday, Cui has turned his attention to film, directing the critically-acclaimed The Blue Bones.
Shot entirely in black and white, the video depicts Cui as a clay figurine, who comes to life to play and sing the song. Three women are alternately shown crawling, walking on crutches, and dancing on sand dunes.
Cui released his latest album, Guang Dong, (光冻, Frozen Light) earlier this month, with "Outside Girl" included as one of the nine tracks.
Perhaps the Beijingiest Beijinger of all, Cui emerged as China's earliest rock musician in the late 1980s, giving up a spot in the Beijing Symphony Orchestra as a trumpeter for the guitar and rock music. He was not permitted to play officially in Beijing until 2004.
"Outside Girl" was written for the China's female Olympic athletes, Cui said during a 2007 performance.
