What’s Up in Beer: Jing A Stout Deal, Beijing Car Bombs at Slow Boat, Guest Beers at Arrow Factory, and More

[Updated 3/15, 10am] The booziest holiday is approaching, which means the beer scene is especially busy, and as alcoholics say: “booze it or lose it.” On that note, here's a rundown of the best drinking-related deals and events in Beijing this week.

Stick to Stout at Jing A
All day on St. Patrick's Day, Jing A Taproom offer buy-two-get-one free on all of their stouts. There's sure to be a stout for everyone given that they have a number on tap, including one of my favorites, the Black Velvet Vanilla Stout, along with two high-gravity collaborated brews: the Eightfold Path Imperial Stout and the Imperial Stormtrooper Stout.

Slow Boat’s Beijing Car Bomb
Slow Boat celebrates Paddy's Day with car bombs – the named-in-poor-taste drink, not the IRA's weapon of choice. If you don't know what a car bomb is, you make one thusly: mix 3/4 of a shot of Jamesons with 1/4 shot of Baileys and, for the Beijing twist, drop the concoction into 1/3 pint of Slow Boat's Sea Anchor Imperial Vanilla Stout. These are sure to go down entirely too easily.

If you are not into bombs, that's ok. They will do 25 RMB Zombie Pirate Pale Ale all night, if you order with an Irish accent, they will take 5 RMB off.

Old Engine Oil on Tap at Arrow Factory
Arrow Factory have has recently launched a couple of guest taps at their new Liangma River location. One is Old Engine Oil from Scotland, famous for its thick and creamy foam, and nutty aroma, which pairs perfectly with their steak and ale pie (I’m a huge fan of both, so couldn’t be happier). Head down between Tuesday and Friday, 4-7pm, for RMB 10 off every beer.

New Beers at the Great Leap
If you’re a fan of Kiwi beers, don't miss their new NZ Pale Ale #45 at Great Leap Brewing. Brewed using New Zealand Nelson Sauvin hops and caramel malts by New Zealander Tom Ashton, you won't get a much more authentic Kiwi brew than this.

John Harrington, brewer at Strong Ale Works, also recently collaborated for his third time round with GLB, creating the Great Strong Smoked Ale. The new beer is golden-amber ale with a smoked aroma derived from Manuka wood. Today marks the first day that it has been sale – grab a glass of it at GLB #6 today at a special price of RMB 25.

Rolling Rolling Craft Brewing
For those people that live out in Yizhuang, there's also good news too. The newly opened Rolling Rolling Craft Brewing is offering buy-one-get-one free on cans of Guinness during St. Patrick's Day. Check my review of this new brewpub here.

And finally, as I blogged about before, Koli’s Camp, which replaced Charcoal in Shunyi, is giving patrons the chance to try a select beer completely free every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday throughout March. Even though they have 100 liters we can't speak for the people that have already made it down there to guzzle the free booze and you might want to head down sooner rather than later.
