Street Eats: Surprisingly Decent Rice Burgers at 7-Eleven

As a direct result of the 2016 Burger Cup we just can't get enough of burgers right now so we decided that there must be other cheap and decent burgers around town. Drumroll please ... enter 7-Eleven's ever-changing refrigerated snack section! While their beef burger looked too miserable (see below), something a little different caught our eye: their rice burger.

Claiming to be rooted in New Orleanian culture (seems highly unlikely), the 'New Orleans chicken leg fillet and fried egg' burger comes wrapped in crispy dried seaweed, or nori, and actually turned out to be quite edible and at a measly 7 kuai, particularly affordable. Ah, we love you, trusty 7-Eleven.

The one thing we did not trust, however, were the instructions to microwave (hot cucumber, anyone?). We dove straight in, mostly because we weren't sure whether 7-Eleven plastic wrappers are cancer-, but also because we were absolutely starving.

With chicken, rice, cucumber, and sauce, the "burger" is quite simple and neat – nothing can really go wrong here – and it's flavored with a lot of black pepper, with just a slight kick at the end.

To conclude: If you are a fan of the sushi rice triangles at 7-Eleven, you will like this. However, if you are a conservative burger lover, this Asian-version of the rice burger might not please your stubborn stomach quite so easily.

One last piece of good news is that since May, 7-Eleven has started to accept Wechat Wallet and Alipay, so you won't even need to take any cash down with you when you pop out of the office to enjoy this lunchtime treat.

Unfortunately this 7-Eleven burger didn't qualify as part of the 2016 Burger Cup, but plenty of others did. To vote for your favorite bread-meat-bread combination, click here.
