Algorithm Lifestyle Store and Restaurant Opens in Rumi Space Between Tuanjiehu and Sanlitun Taikooli

In the space previously occupied by Rumi, we now have Algorithm, a lifestyle store, restaurant, and café all in one. The downstairs space serves as a store, while the lofty upstairs balcony is occupied by seating with plenty of room of between the tables to create a calm environment with added privacy.

The menu is split in two between brunch and dinner menus. Their brunch menu (available between 11am and 4pm daily, and thus a good option for those working a schedule with non-mainstream weekends), left us feeling neither over- nor underwhelmed.

The open sandwiches (RMB 55, an item also available on their dinner menu), are inspired by Danish cuisine and came as a set of four, with various toppings: ground nuts with sour cream, fried bacon with toasted mushrooms, asparagus with salmon, and seasonal fruits. The sandwiches were not bad at all, but we wouldn't have minded them to be bigger though, or at least have a few more toppings.

We also tried the waffle sandwiches with ham, cheese, and eggs (RMB 65). These were not really 'waffles' in the sense, but more like a grilled cheese sandwich plus an egg, and as uninspiring as that sounds, it was a crunchy and gooey mixture that we would have again.

The chicken caesar salad (RMB 68) was sizable, and while rather innocuous, it was missing a key ingredient: anchovies. We were however pleased to see a good balance in toppings between the chicken, parmesan, croutons, and sundried tomatoes.

On the ground floor, the shop has a carefully laid out selection of imported European designer goods for around the house, from vases to cups and bowls, as well as a large collection of locally-designed clothes. We also really liked the scented candles and notebooks, which would make wonderful presents.

While we definitely wouldn't recommend against visiting Algorithm (we have also yet to try the dinner menu, and we will be back to enjoy their patio once the temperatures start dropping), we don't feel like the food selection quite measures up to the goods on display for sale, which are all carefully selected and of high design.
