'The Shallows' 'Black Sea' Out Today

Two aquatic-themed movies hit Chinese cinemas today, both of which have been well received by critics and audiences alike.

First up, The Shallows (鲨滩) which we first flagged would be arriving on the mainland in late June.

Since then, the shark-survival film starring Blake Lively has earned even more positive reviews, and currently sits pretty on 77 percent at Rotten Tomatoes.

The low-budget B-movie thriller tells the story of a surfer who finds herself in hot water when she's bitten by a Great White shark.

Just don’t go into it hoping to learn anything worthwhile about actual shark behaviour. Plenty of shark experts have poured cold water over many of the inherent claims in the film.

The second deep-sea feature Black Sea (黑海夺金) looks like it could be even better.

The underwater thriller sees former naval officer Robinson (Jude Law) and a misfit crew of unemployed sailors on the hunt for a sunken Nazi U-boat, rumored to contain a fortune in gold.

Also out today, Nine Lives (九条命) and Absolutely Anything (魔法老师), but you’re better off seeing either Bourne (谍影重重5) or Star Trek Beyond (星际迷航3:超越星辰) than those two stinkers.
