Street Eats: Winter Comfort Food Döner Kebab Opens at Sanlitun Soho

It’s increasingly freezing cold outside, thanks to the influence of this year's La Niña, so we understand why you probably just want to stay at home, curled up on the sofa with a thick blanket and sipping hot chocolate. Unfortunately, however, you do still have to leave the house for mundane things like work and human interaction, in which case you may start craving warm, filling comfort foods like a good old doner kebab.

Döner Kebab opened in late October on the first floor of Sanlitun Soho, and provides Turkish kebabs (or shawarma), seven pide (a Turkish take on pizza), noodles, a bunch of hot drinks, and even hookahs. The shop has room for just five tables, as well as several tables outside, and a huge TV hangs on the wall, playing MTV Euro.

Six wrapped doners are available (RMB 25-38), with a combination of two different types of meat: beef or chicken. We opted for the basics: one wrapped beef doner (RMB 28) and one wrapped chicken doner (RMB 25). Both sizable wraps are served with hot black tea, and the wraps were relatively big, and we particularly enjoyed the juicy and flavorful beef option.

A fancier meal version includes french fries, sliced pickles, tomatoes, and rice on the side (RMB 38-62). The place was quiet on a weekday evening, populated only by delivery guys from Sherpa’s dashing in to pick up orders, demonstrating that you might not ever have to leave your couch at all to enjoy Doner Kebab's goods. For us, these authentic wraps provide the perfect grab-and-go lunch – simple, fast, and easy.
