A Closer Look at the Bar & Club Awards: Beijing's Best Pub Quiz

With the "A Closer Look" series, we raise our glasses in recognition of the Beijinger 2016 Bar & Club Award winners, before giving a toast (in text form, of course) about why they were selected by you, our readers. Below, we take a look at the one winner and two Outstanding Mentions in this year’s Best Pub Quiz category.

Paddy O’Shea’s proved popular with Beijinger readers in the 2016 Bar & Club Awards. In addition to winning the Best Happy Hour, Best Sports Bar, Best Bar Manager categories, the bar also earned the title of 2016 Bar/Club of the Year.

If those accolades aren’t reason enough to stop by for a pint of Guinness, Paddy’s also snagged the top spot for Beijing’s Best Quiz Night. On top of all that, the bar was also given an award for Outstanding Beer Selection, so if you like to get quizzical but your drinking team has a trivia problem, this is definitely the quiz for you. Finally, no pub is complete without a great menu. Paddy’s offers all your pub favorites like beef and Guinness pie, fish and chips, and bangers and mash, but also takes orders for the Ganges Indian Restaurant upstairs. Get your pint, curry, and quiz every Wednesday night at 8pm.

Paddy O’Shea’s may take the cake for most extensive and diverse menu offerings, but for those seeking haute quizine and well-crafted drinks, it’s hard to beat a quiz in a bar owned by a chef. At 4Corners, Jun Trinh’s menu of satisfying bar food with Southeast Asian characteristics is sure to keep your stomach happy while your brain’s busy trying to win free booze. The quiz takes place on Tuesdays at 8pm.

If you’re of the academic persuasion, work in Zhongguancun, are studying Chinese, or just want to get really, really hammered on a school night, then the quiz night at Lush is the quiz night for you. The Lush quiz offers mountains of prizes and oceans of free booze, but you definitely won’t mind paying for your own drinks once you see the low, low, prices. That could be why Beijinger readers gave the Lush quiz an Outstanding mention in this year’s awards. Lush has been priding itself on serving only the most genuine alcohol since it opened in 2005, so if you are planning a walk on the Wudaokou side, the Lush quiz (Wednesdays, 8pm) could be a great (and safe) place to pre-game.
