Beijing Barflies Left Reeling By The Tiki Bungalow's Sudden Closure

A vast swath of popular Beijing bars have been falling like flies as of late – from Beixinqiao's Más to Xingfucun's BBC – and now another beloved establishment has sadly (and suddenly) bit the dust: The Tiki Bungalow.

Popular nightlife blogger Jim Boyce first broke the news earlier today. Peter Carey, co-owner and investor at the award-winning Andingmen-area bar informed Tiki's WeChat group members earlier today that he and his colleagues will need to vacate the premises before Friday.

"After a recent fire two doors down we believed we would be able to continue business once the the investigation was completed," Carey posted. "Today we found out that isn't the case and they are knocking down the entire strip. We hope to open another location in the future but as this has just happened we have no idea when or where that might be."

Famous for its potent cocktails and cheeky, retro-cum-tropical atmosphere, Tiki has already closed its doors and will sadly not have the chance to give its dedicated following one last hurrah.

"We're done. We literally have to get out by 2pm on Friday, so a lot of packing and organizing," Carey said.

In the bar's WeChat group, Carey told Tiki devotees: "Sorry to all you guys and thanks for all your support over the last couple of years."

Also down for the count is the Iguana Room, the next door area the Tiki folks took over a less than two months ago.

When asked by a member of the group if they planned to reopen elsewhere, Carey said "It's all a bit hectic to think about it right now" before adding: "We hope so."

I agree, the sooner the better. Sad news for sure.

Very kind of you Lysander. I passed that message on to the owners and they said thanks, but they have it under control.

Do they need people to help with the moving process? I'm sure fans of the bar will be more than happy to swing by during their off time to help shift tables and other items.

Pity the man too dense for satire.

All accents are equal, except some accents are more equal than others.

reopen soon please!
