Sayonara: Okra 1949 Announces Its Closure July 1; Okra Hong Kong to Continue

We are saddened to hear news from Okra 1949 that they are set to close their venue in Sanlitun's Hidden City.

The restaurant, which has been a standout option for Japanese fare in the city for over four years, was mostly known for its incredible ingredients, high-quality seafood, and an overall creative take on Japanese cuisine. Okra 1949 will be open for the remainder of this month, serving its last dinner service on July 1.

Their WeChat announcement, released today (Jun 21), states that the decision to close came as a result of their lease ending, as well as the fact that the building that they are in, opposite to the Jing-A Taproom, is aging.

Thankfully, their Hong Kong restaurant, which we visited a few months ago, and is also run by Chef Max Levy, will live on. The post adds that the team may "present Beijing with a new, improved iteration of Okra – so keep your eyes peeled!"

So, head down to 1949 while you still can and enjoy what is one of the best Japanese meals in the city, made from the freshest seafood, organic vegetables picked that very morning, and incredible housemade tofu. And finally, don't forget to cheers the team with a round of craft sake.
