EAT: Modernista Summer Menu, New Burger at Slow Boat, Rukis Stop Production, So Long Sureño

Hutong survivor Modernista has redesigned its menu for summer and this time it has a strong Spanish feel. Paella takes the starring role on the new menu but there is plenty more to enjoy besides, including tapas (which can be ordered individually or as a tapas platter) and meat and cheese platters (pictured above). We've got our eye on their selection of pintxos (basically snacky dishes skewered to pieces of bread), which include classic and modern combinations such as Manchego cheese and pear, boiled egg and chorizo, and walnuts and palm hearts with anchovies.

Elsewhere in the realm of new menus, Slow Boat have added a couple of new items to their menu. Just in time for the 2018 Beijing Burger Cup, they have dreamed up the "Mourning the Morning" burger, featuring an all-beef patty, topped with a sunny side up egg, bacon jam, spicy and smoky adobo sauce, and freshly sliced avocado. You can also swap out the beef for a tofu patty and hold the bacon jam to make it veggie friendly. And, as much as we love Slow Boat's beer-battered fries, we're glad that see that they have now added a lighter alternative in the form of sweet potato fries.

A quick note/reminder that Rukis, Beijing's only Estonian rye bread purveyor, has stopped production due to the ending lease on their current location, which they previously shared with Big Bear Baked Goods. Word is they're hoping to be back later this year, but until then you'll have to manage without their tasty rye bread.

Finally, in case you missed the news last week, after a decade of serving elegant eats at the sunken garden of The Opposite House, Sureño is set to shut down on May 31. The Sureño team at least plan to go out on a high note with a "greatest hits" menu from May 28-31 that sees the return of its pizza, which helped the restaurant make a name for itself during a far different dining era when it debuted in 2008. More info in their WeChat post announcing the closure.
