Beijing Women’s Organizations Join Hands To Celebrate International Women's Day

Every year, March brings a most significant day for women across the globe. Mar 8 marks International Women’s Day (IWD), a date that celebrates and showcases the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women, as well as our historical fight to attain justice and equality — for ourselves and our children.

True sisterhood must be comprehensive and intersectional to support, sustain, amplify and protect the identities, needs, voices and claims of every female-identifying individual worldwide, no matter their background and circumstances.

This year's theme is none other than “Break the bias.” Imagining a world free from gender bias, stereotypes, and discrimination is not just a beautiful utopia, but a necessary step towards justice, peace, and development.

Every year, a range of themed events sprout up in Beijing around IWD. Every year I look forward to the festive angle of it all. Seeking a better world is not at odds with having fun! That being said, my favorite events are those where fun and action meet. Are you on the lookout for one of those this year? Run, don’t walk, and you may still be able to grab a ticket for Breaking the Bias Together: Beijing Celebrates International Women’s Day. This event will take place on Mar 8, 6.30 to 9.30pm, at a most tempting venue — Xian Bar EAST Beijing.

Behind the wheel is a bevy of local groups and organizations serving women across China, including Beijing Women’s Network, the Clothing Auction Network, Ladies Who Tech, Date Night China, Female Expats in Beijing, Palygo, Well Women, Viva, and Female Health Empowerment Network.

Expect an evening of exciting activities where you will connect with like-minded people, hopefully make new friends, celebrate women and girls and, most importantly, contribute to the cause itself. Proceeds from the event will be donated to Project A, a charity initiative founded in the fall of 2021 by long-time Beijing expat Megan Purvis along with mental health expert Qin Xiaojie.

Still young but powerful, Project A aspires to provide affordable mental health support to survivors of abusive relationships. It’s no surprise that they’ve been warmly received by the community. Their next six-week therapy program is set to start on Mar 13, offering help, healthy coping strategies and a safe, strictly confidential environment where women may gradually heal from the trauma of abuse.

As if this was not enough, there will also be plenty of juicy raffles loaded with fabulous prizes totaling more than RMB 50,000, courtesy of a long list of business owners and restaurateurs around Beijing. Think CDB Apothecary, International Medical Centre, Oasis, Sherpas, La Pizza, Peach, Slow Boat, The Opposite House, Taozi Tree Yoga… and much, much more, ranging from dental care to skin care products, wine, leisure, and education.

Just a solid wonderful evening, with professional photography to boot — and all genders are welcome.

Breaking the Bias takes place at Beijing EAST Hotel on Mar 8 from 6.30-9.30pm. Tickets cost RMB 100 and include one alcoholic or non-alcoholic drink, with proceeds going to Project A. Scan the QR code in the poster above to register. If you'd like to stay at EAST Hotel on the night of Mar 8, attendees can get a room for RMB 880 (breakfast included). Send your details with a screenshot of your event ticket to reservations@east-beijing.com to reserve.
