2008 Nov 04 Election Morning: Where to Watch Coverage of the US Presidential Election Results

Update: If you're in the mood for celebration, see this post over at Beijing Boyce's blog for a roundup of election evening parties.

So it’s finally here. For weeks, months even, we’ve been whiling away the hours debating the future of the world and extolling the virtues of our favored helmsman…and now it’s almost over. Live coverage of the election results will be screened at various venues across town and Beijing Boyce has already done a great job of providing a roundup of the various venues offering live coverage here.

To summarize Boyce's post, big cups of coffee will be served at The Saddle Cantina from 7.30am for RMB 20 and there'll also be breakfast deals over at The Rickshaw.

Sequoia Cafe will be screening live CNN coverage on a big screen all day, so you can fill in the – red or blue – puzzle pieces in exhilarating real-time, whilst giving those poor old nails a rest from all that biting (breakfast and lunch will be on offer).

Frank’s Place is also offering a special breakfast deal for the election, they'll be switching on the box at 7.30am and the Goose & Duck will have both CNN and Fox coverage.

A decent-sized crowd of American political junkies is also expected to cram into The Bridge Cafe in Wudaokou from 7.30am onwards.

Finally, over at The Renaissance Hotel the American Chamber of Commerce is hosting a double-screened gala, replete with mock-vote shenanigans and a balloon drop to herald the final announcement (RMB 100 member,s RMB 250 non-members). To get in you’ll need your passport or proper photo ID - more details about the event here.

Today's NYTimes offers a nice little guide of what to watch for and the critical moments of the count. They recommend getting to a TV or logging on to your favorite site by 8am (7pm on the US East Coast - it's a 13 hour time difference now that daylight saving has ended) when meaningful results will start coming through. Confusion is always the hallmark of polling day, so expect ups-and-downs, highs-and-lows and contentious counting.

For one of China’s most well-known contemporary artists, Lin Tianmiao certainly is cagey about her artistic process. When I sat down with her at her home studio in Songzhuang and began asking about her new exhibit at the Beijing Center for the Arts (BCA), entitled “The Same,” she claimed that she “just came up with a title” after finishing her works, simply because “every exhibit needs one.” Whether she’s being coy or just evasive, this comment clashes with the BCA’s own website, which explains that the name is meant to remind us how “everything looks the same if you watch at a distance; and nothing may be the same if you get closer.”

Enjoying the holiday? Fireworks were pretty spectacular on Sunday. They looked better than ever after a dozen glasses of Great Leap beer. It’s a quiet time for news, unsurprisingly. Between Sunday night and Monday morning, 5,000 intrepid sanitation workers cleaned up 170 tons of fireworks debris – so well done, guys. Good job. There’s still quite a bit bunched up in the corners on my alley though, so if you could send a couple of your peeps over, that would be great.
