Second IKEA Outlet Slated for Beijing

The People's Daily reported earlier this week that IKEA has unveiled plans for a second Beijing outlet in Daxing, though the store won't be opening until 2014.

The People's Daily article stated: “The Inter IKEA Center Group (IICG) unveiled Tuesday [November 24] two 'Super Regional Shopping Center' projects located respectively in Daxing District in Beijing and Wuxi City in eastern Jiangsu Province.”

Although the IKEA outlets will be the shopping centers' main attraction, the complexes will also feature a range of retail tenants in “fashion, food, home electronics and entertainment.”

The report claims the Beijing center will have an area of “200,000 square meters... and a parking lot that can serve 7,000 cars.”

Daxing is deep in Beijing's south past the Fifth Ring Road, so the store will also be serviced by “light rail and buses,” though it is unclear whether this will be privately-owned transport provided by IKEA, or part of Beijing's public transport network.

When the first Ikea first opened, I was really miffed by the large number of people who came in just to sit down and rest for hours at a time. Mostly old people with their grandkids. They weren't serious shoppers and had no intention to buy anything. Even brought along their own snacks. Hope the store management learned from that and will apply some more scrutiny on this store. It would make it a better shopping experience.
