Friendly & Prompt: Yun Hai Yao Opens at Houhai

It’s easy to miss this restaurant at Houhai’s busy Jinding Bridge, because unlike its neighbors, it’s not topped with flashing neon beer signs.

With a simple wooden interior and handmade menu, Yun Hai Yao presents a varied sampling of Yunnan dishes, such as traditional steamed claypot chicken infused with mushrooms and melon (RMB 48), and “Old Kunming” braised beef (RMB 58) – a meaty, spicy kick balanced with refreshing mint and spinach leaves.

Service is friendly and prompt, and while the food isn’t up there with the best in town, it’s a convenient spot to escape the crowds and enjoy views of the lake.
