2010 May 09 We Heart Taobao: School Yourself in China’s Online Shopping

Taobao is fantastic. That’s a fact. Think about it: They have more registered users than the entire population of Russia, and that many people can’t be wrong. This online shopping behemoth will deliver anything to your door – even some things that you had given up on finding in Beijing.

There’s just one catch: Taobao is a Chinese-language website, which means most expats are scared of it. So much so that an entire industry of “Taobao agents” has sprung up to deal with the hassle on your behalf. But those folks will charge you a percentage – and anyway, what’s there to be scared of? You made it to Beijing, didn’t you?

Take a deep breath and set off on an adventure that will revolutionize the way you shop. (And remember that resolution you made to improve your Chinese? Taobao will help with that too.)

Class is now in session.

Mind you, we're not trying to provide an exhaustive guide to navigating Taobao. For that, you need to check out Taobaofieldguide.com, an invaluable resource that walks you through the entire process. What we’ve done is to supplement their guide with a few updated screenshots – and to offer some additional tips.

See it all here in our Taobao How-To.

To make your Taobao experience easier, we can also offer you a handy cut-and-paste version of the useful phrases you'll be using to communicate with sellers ...

When it comes to shopping experiences that are truly bizarre, the Internet gives even Tokyo a run for its money. eBay sellers pioneered the trend by offering items such as a Braille Playboy, an ex-wife’s wedding dress and even someone’s grandmother. It appears that Taobao is not far behind.

Three years ago, I taught at a building on the southeast corner of Guanghua Bridge. It was an ugly thing, with peeling maroon paint and dark, musty hallways. There was no air conditioning and in the summer it got so unbearable that sometimes we had to relocate to a nearby coffee shop.

I worked on the eighth floor. Between classes I’d look out the window by the water cooler and watch the construction of the new CCTV headquarters. People called it the Big Shorts but back then it looked more like a pair of assless chaps.

Yi House (formerly known as Fennel) offers a hotel brunch like few others. It’s a more thoughtful, intimate model based on a limited a la carte selection – similar to that of Maison Boulud. The menu is divided into four sections (starters, mains, Asian and desserts) from which diners can order any four dishes. With a larger group you can sample everything, but as long as you’re not dining alone you’re in for a diverse experience.
