2010 Aug 27 A Down-to-Earth Crowd: The Stumble Inn Opens in the Village

What was once a bar in a Lucky Street basement has reopened – finally – in Sanlitun Village. It’s tempting to paint this as a rags-to-riches story, but then the original Stumble Inn was a fine little bar in itself. The elements that made Shane O’Neill’s bar a fleeting success in 2009 are recast here across a two-story space whose large windows give the place a “bright lights, big city” feel.

The pool table, dart board and flat-screen TVs are all upstairs, inviting some punters to draw comparisons with the Rickshaw. With 101 beers (from RMB 25), a huge cocktail selection (RMB 35 upwards) and racks of liquor, The Stumble Inn is more of a drinker’s bar than the Rickshaw was, but it should pull a similarly down-to-earth crowd of sports fans and fun-seekers as Kris Ryan’s bar did in its day.

Completing the job are a terrace, menu of solid bar favorites, and Wi-Fi to capture daytime slaves to the laptop. A quiz night, happy hour and other promotions are forthcoming. Just one question: Now that the Village has a few decent bars, will they stop barricading the place off at night?

Good for: A one-stop world tour of beer
Also try: Paddy O’Shea’s, Frank’s Place

Welcome to our weekly roundup of all that's going on in nightlife this weekend in Beijing. Tonight (Nov 12) sees the grand opening of Link Star, the new club-lounge in World City (north of The Place). It's a decent little spot, with a good layout. Getting taxis around that area is often a bit tough at night, but it's worth a look. The party's free and kicks off at 9pm. Over at Chaoyang Park West Gate, Suzie Wong's hosts their monthly Suzie's Night party, from 10pm. The champagne will be flowing.

  • Twilo: Hidden Drinks and Dancing at Guanghua Lu

If Twilo existed in a cartoon, it would probably be hidden inside a seemingly innocuous tree trunk. As with Haze, a few meters away, an extremely steep staircase leads you to the basement dance floor – although at Twilo you emerge awkwardly behind the DJ booth. At least it looks good, thanks to a futuristic, contoured design.

  • Doron: Suntory Time on Dongzhimen

Accessed via struggling Italian restaurant Abella, Doron falls short of the impressive standards set by other Japanese bars. The shabby, threadbare carpeted stairs up to the bar inspire little confidence, and the decor does nothing to alleviate those doubts. The space is split between a lounge with deep couches, and a fully stocked but uninspiring bar area whose design appears inspired by a back-alley pool hall.
