2010 Nov 23 Your Guide to Beijing's Halal Foods

Halal cuisine – food prepared according to Muslim dietary laws – plays a surprisingly big role in Beijing’s food scene, particular in the areas populated by the Hui Minority. Halal foods must be free of alcohol, and meats may only come from non-carnivorous animals that were slaughtered in a humane fashion, something that often makes halal meats a safer and more delicious alternative to regular meats. Many of those living in Beijing are familiar with the flavors of Hui cuisine from their visits to Xinjiang restaurants, but the following places can open up your culinary landscape to many new and wonderful dishes.

The dreaded cold season is back Beijing, but not to fear, hot pot (huoguo 火锅 ) is here to warm you through the winter. Whether it’s a small pot of hearty mutton hot pot or a sweet and delicate soymilk miso hot pot, there are plenty of reasons to look forward to a long winter. Taken from the December 2 issue of Agenda, we grabbed the long listing of different hot pot styles and where to try them.

Years ago, finding a proper Thanksgiving turkey or Christmas ham was a real challenge – nowadays, the challenge is to find a place to hide from the rich assortment of meat-heavy holiday meals. Agenda went out in search of the best places to rediscover vegetables.

Just because the winter is bitter cold, that doesn’t mean life can’t be a little sweet. With this thought in mind, we’ve searched through the city’s traditional cuisine for dishes that remind us of bright, clear skies, and give us a warm feeling in the belly. They’re sure to put some spring in your step!

The French may have their stinky cheeses, but no one has mastered the funk like the Chinese. In China, anything smelly can be made into a delicacy and while some of these foods started as accidents, others were thoughtfully crafted. If you consider yourself bold or open-minded with your meals, then you are in luck because stinky is the new delicious. Agenda points your nose and taste buds in the right direction.

Barbeque may be considered a summer food, but in the winter, there is no better way to warm things up than a piece of seared meat. Agenda put together a savory list of barbeque joints to help keep you warm this winter.
