2011 Feb 15 A Click Away: Do All Your Clothes Shopping Online

Sometimes it's better to shop without all the hassle of, you know, leaving your home. No cramped fitting rooms, no annoying salespeople and no lines. Below are some of our favorite e-commerce shopping options for clothes and accessories.

ASOS (www.asos.com)
The UK’s largest online-only fashion store, ASOS’ expansive selection is trendy and well-varied. The items range from cheap to expensive, casual to formal, basic to edgy, high-fashion (Diesel, Miss Sixty, True Religion) to “alternative” (House of Holland, Bob & Blossom, No Added Sugar). Best of all, standard shipping (delivery within 11-12 days) is free.

GAP (www.gap.cn)
The world’s favorite all-American clothing retailer just opened its first store in Beijing a few months ago, along with an online website that ships to China.

Mango (http://shop.mango.com)
The Spanish chain store which produces well-received fast-fashion products has just unveiled a new and improved website, with more convenient browsing. Guaranteed 2-3 day delivery.

Net-a-Porter (www.net-a-porter.com) and Mr. Porter (www.mrporter.com)
Hard-to-find designer items are no object at these websites (Net-a-Porter for the ladies, Mr. Porter for the gentlemen), a luxury website that stocks over 300 international brands including Acne, Chloe, Stella McCartney, Christian Louboutin and Jimmy Choo. Shipping at around RMB 200/order.

ospop (http://therealospop.taobao.com)
Its redesigned canvas bags and sneakers have already earned shout-outs in the New York Times and GQ. This young American label – whose ethos is built around channeling the working class in China – is finally bringing its wares home via an online sales channel on Taobao.

ShopBop (www.shopbop.com)
Our preferred high-fashion website – with a sophisticated selection of clothing, swimsuits, shoes and bags, as well as helpful trend spotlights to guide our purchasing decisions – has just extended its shipping services to China. Free worldwide shipping in three days or less on orders over USD 100.

Solestruck (www.solestruck.com)
An American-based online shoe store with free worldwide shipping, but you’ll need to use a Chinese credit card to make your purchase. Over 60 women’s shoe brands are available here, including Steve Madden, Jeffrey Campbell and Kenneth Cole.

Taobao (www.taobao.com)
We once devoted an entire cover feature to this e-commerce marketplace, which sells everything from M.A.C lipstick to kitschy tees to Dolce Vita booties. Even if you can’t read Chinese, many of the searches can be conducted in English – plus we have a step-by-step guide on how to sign up for an account as well as find your desired items.

Topshop (www.topshop.com)
This British retailing chain has earned fans amongst “real people” and celebrities alike. We’re not lucky enough to have a brick-and-mortar store in Beijing, but at least they still ship their stuff here for a reasonable price. Shipping in 5-8 days for roughly RMB 110.

If you know of any other websites that ship to China for cheap, please share them below!

The risk is whether or not these things will look good or even fit. what are the return policies like for these shops?

ospop boots are the most disguisting things i have ever seen!

The cyber stalker; having very poor social skills so that they may have a limited number or no friends, knowing no life outside of the Internet due to insecurities that make them fear the real world...
ouch!

Re: A Click Away: Do All Your Clothes Shopping Online

Surprised Dong-Xi.com isn't on here, I ordered some stuff for my girl and it worked really well.

Re: A Click Away: Do All Your Clothes Shopping Online

I think now is a great time to open an online store. We don't have as many online stores as people in the US so it should be easy for a mom & pop business to squeeze through and be profitable.

And don't forget the risk of paying a ridiculous amount of duty: 260¥ on an item that cost US$260. Also Solestruck's postage is only free for orders over $199.

  • Who Will Win the E-Commerce Battle?

In the last couple years, tons of studies have been conducted on the Chinese netizen’s buying behavior. Nearly all major retailers are eager to swoop in and win their favor, especially with research showing growth in China’s online retail market from USD 94.6 billion this year to USD 159.4 billion by 2015. So far we have fast-fashion chain stores as well as luxury brands scrambling to find the most effective way to enter the market. Is it through the Internet, or should they open a brick-and-mortar store first? Who will win the e-commerce battle?

  • Free Scarves for Expats at D.I.S

Most emerging local brands target the increasingly influential Chinese consumer, not us humble expats. And when they do come after us, they tend to meet with limited success. Not the case with Dutch Items Shanghai, a Shanghai-based boutique designed by and for expat women. D.I.S opened its first shop in 2007, but already has four branches and counting – the latest of which is in Hong Kong. None in Beijing yet, but thanks to their recently launched web shop, Beijingers now have ready access to their high-quality clothing and accessories as well.

  • The Spend Commandments: Luxbible

Luxbible is not for the nouveau riche or the bargain shopper. Only a fashion-savvy cosmopolite could fully appreciate the elite offerings of this luxury lifestyle platform.

  • Revealed: Where to Buy Valentine's Day Lingerie Part 2

Perhaps you’ve already checked out some of our brick-and-mortar options recommended in our earlier post and are still not satisfied. (Either that or you have yet to leave your house. We don’t blame you. It sure is cold out there.) In any case, here is a way to shop for naughty lingerie from the comfort of your own home. But hurry – you’re running out of time! Some of these places do offer overnight shipping; otherwise, consider these a belated Valentine’s Day gift.

  • The Ship Has Sailed: Bon Voyage to ShopWeShip.com

Expats who rely on the material comforts of home may be disheartened to hear that ShopWeShip.com, previously known as Dong-Xi.com, has just announced that it will soon be discontinuing its services.

ShopWeShip.com was first established to give Chinese residents access to e-commerce sites that only shipped to US billing addresses. Back then, our options were few – we could hardly find quality Western food around town, let alone chic clothes from mid- to high-end retailers.
