Weibo Roundup: Shame, Disgust, Creeps and an Epic Fail

In our earlier post, we looked into Weibo and how it’s a hotbed of gossip but it’s Ms. Guo Meimei’s 15 minutes of fame that has really taken China by storm. Other Internet news includes: disgusting dishes, Radiohead's Weibo debut, and an awful government Photoshop gone viral.

As farfetched as it sounds, Guo Meimei could be in Hawaii right now, seeing as her attempt to flee to Australia has failed. Despite her newfound fame, she is not a happy bunny. She “Can’t handle it anymore” according to her Weibo. This has had an effect on Red Cross China’s reputation too, with netizens questioning whether their funds are going into helping those in need or into the pockets of corrupted corporate fat cats. With all these lies, it’s like the boy who cried wolf. Well, the girl who bragged Red Cross, Maserati and then fled with her tail between her legs.

Another trend that has Weibo-ers posting away is the recent CNN poll on disgusting foods: interestingly a majority of the most reviled foodstuffs are traditional Asian foods. Users have been posting their most hated chow and debating whether number one, century egg, really is the “devil raw egg”. Go here for the full report on innards, moldy crisps and fried tarantula. Delicious.

British band Radiohead have been dabbling in Weibo – they created their own account a few days ago. So far their only post is "Testing the Weibo" but they already have over 60,000 followers. Go here to get their updates.

The local government of Huili, Yunnan has come under fire after a badly Photoshopped image of three government officials floating on a road went viral. Apparently they were meant to be doing a road check. Dozens of spoofs have been made. There’s variety too – the Last Supper, the moon landing and plenty more. Scroll down for photos.

Great update! I love using Weibo now and I'm pushing my expat patients as well as blog fans to get onto Weibo. I wrote a step-by-step how-to-use-Weibo guide on my blog here:

Weng said he wanted to extend an apology to the public for the girl's actions. Wang should not have spent so much money on a Maserati for his girlfriend, he said, although he added that only one of Guo's luxury handbags was genuine.

Well, I, for one, certainly feel much better ...
