The Beijinger 10th RBCA: Meet the Personalities - Trevor Metz

As voting opens in this year's the Beijinger Reader Bar & Club Awards, we look to the eight nominees for the Personality of the Year award and ask them for their take on some of the best the city has to offer.

First up, Trevor Metz, manager at Plan B in Shuangjing.

On the Best Hutong Bar
I really like Serk. I think it's pretty unique. Sure it's got douchebags, but at least it's got bikes.

On the Best for Outdoor Drinking
I like the Drum and Bell. Yeah, it's ratty and it's old, but it exemplifies what I like about Beijing.

On the Best Rooftop
I'll say Kokomo, cause I used to get dragged along there with my degenerate friends. I'm not really one for rooftop drinking because of my bald head.

On the Best Sanlitun
Wherever I'm not getting beaten up or hounded to buy "stuff." I do like Luga's Villa, though.

On the Best CBD
Tim's Texas Bar-B-Q is the place I go to most. I like the service and I often end up there playing darts.

On the Best Local Craft Beer
I'm not one for hoppy beers, but I recognize the nascent craft beer scene in Beijing is improving all the time. But I don't think I could pick just one at this point.

On the Best Manager
I like Dave at The Brick – because he gives me free alcohol.

On the Best for Daytime Drinking
I've always liked Aperitivo because you're ground level and it's a good place for people watching, if you can get a seat outside.

On the Best Value for Money
For me, hands down Revolution. Xiao Ming has never made me a bad cocktail and the prices are pretty reasonable.

On the Bar of the Year
Brussels. I love Kenn and Nick and they always play great hosts whenever I go in there. Quality drinks, good food. Sometimes it takes a little while to get a drink in there, but that may be because they're doing so well.

On the Best Survivor
I'd probably say The Tree as it's been so consistent. It's the same, dank, dark, nasty bar that it was when I arrived in Beijing eight years ago. And the pizza is still the best in town.

On the Best for Whiskey
I would still say Ichikura. There's something about sitting in that small, tight environment that lends itself to great whiskey drinking.

On the Best Place to Take a Date
My apartment.

On the Maddest Regulars
It has to be The Brick. There can't be many bars in town with a following that would tattoo the name of the bar on themselves!

On the Best Happy Hour
Flamme. Paul Mathew creates great drinks and anytime you can get on those; that's a hell of a bargain.

On the Best Hidden Gem
I'm not sure if it still qualifies as "hidden," but I would say Revolution.

Thanks for mentioning us over at Brussels for bar of the year, Trevor. Means a lot to get the thumbs up from another bar owner!
