Talking Tunes: The Killers to Try Again in Beijing. Second Time Lucky?

The Killers - Mr. Brightside, from when they were good

We all know by now not to get our hopes up after we first hear that global superstars are winging their way to Beijing, especially when they've got form for flaking on us, but it's hard not to get even a twinge of excitement at the news that The Killers are scheduled to be coming to Beijing on Oct 1.

Again, don't raid your savings for tickets (RMB 280-1,280) just yet, you might end up just having to wait in line to get a refund like we did three years ago (seriously, they pulled out just days before the show back in 2010. They'd even done a bunch of interviews in the run-up), but if you want those cheap seats it might be worth keeping at least one eye on Piao.com for when those tickets go on sale.

We'll have news of the cancellation upcoming show, as soon as we hear any.

One show that will go on – save for an embarrassing late tug – is Steve Vai performing at the ThinkPad Space (MasterCard Center) tomorrow night (Jul 26). The Zappa axeman with over 15 million records sold takes the stage at 8pm.

A wonderful puck of news, which caught out at least a couple of my fellow office folk earlier today, is that BBC talent show When Will I Be Famous 2007 winners, Red Hot Chilli Pipers, will also be taking in Beijing in October. You've never heard of "bagrock?" Then you're in for a treat. They weren't named Scottish Live Act of the Year 2010 for nothing, you know. And they'll provide the proof at Poly Theater on Oct 17.

Given the swift nature of the developments, you'd be forgiven if it's passed you by that Dr. Dre will be in da house at Spark on Saturday night (Jul 27). More of that on thebeijinger.com tomorrow, but suffice is it to say right now, that the Doc will almost certainly not be performing.

There's a bunch of live music coming up in the next few days. Here are a handful of highlights:

  • Don't miss Kirin J Callinan on his "Embracism" world tour. He takes in Yugong Yishan tomorrow night (Jul 26), supported by White+.
  • Elsewhere on Friday night, 2 Kolegas will host a night of eclectic electronica. Digital Freedom Vol 2 gets going at 10pm.
  • Temple Bar celebrates two years on Friday with performances from Junglemico Project, Daikai and Rolling Bowling among others.
  • RMB 2000 goes to the winner of the "A freestyle battle night at Yugong Yishan on Saturday night (Jul 27).
  • While over at Lush on Saturday, the House Music Alliance will have a get together offering like-minded house music lovers to get together.

Check out more music events in our events section.

Dr. Dre will play us out because he likely won't do on Saturday night.

We welcome the House Music Alliance to Lush on Saturday, but in order to ensure we provide the best service to those who attend, if the organizers could please contact me with an estimated head count, that would be fantastic. While we always welcome impromptu events, we can always offer better service with a little advance notice.

Thanks very much,
Josh

A reader wrote in and pointed out that the reason the band "'flaked out' on Beijing last time in 2010 was because lead singer, Brandon Flowers' mother was dying of brain cancer. The show was cancelled at the end of January, she passed away at the beginning of February. A quick Google would have given him the cause of the cancellation."

Our sincere condolences to Brandon and his family and we hope the show will indeed happen this time in Beijing and that it goes well.
