Two Injured in Subway Incident at Guo Mao Station: Report

An "incident" at Guo Mao Station on Thursday evening left two people with minor injuries, and caused "confusion" during Thursday evening's rush hour, The Wall Street Journal reported.

"A rush-hour disturbance at a crowded Beijing subway interchange on Thursday sparked 'confusion' among passengers that left two people with 'minor abrasions,'" the report said, under the headline "Beijing Rattled by Incident at Subway Station."

A statement from the Beijing Subway asked commuters "not to panic," which, along with photos circulated on social media indicating some kind of rush to the exits, indicates that something may have caused subway riders to dash for the doors. The incident may have started when one person stepped on the foot or shoe of another, triggering an altercation, the report said.

Hot weather, heavy crowds, and increased security of late are raising the heat on subway commuters, who later this year will also face rising prices.

The Guomao subway at rush hour is always about 5 seconds away from mass hysteria, particularly the areas around the escalators and stairs. One wrong move or panicked yell and a stampede could easily occur.
