Our old buddy and colleague Charles Liu has written an enlightening piece for The Nanfang about the falling popularity of Beijing’s private karaoke parlors. Rising property costs, bidding wars between various chains, government restrictions and declining interest have been the primary reasons for this deep slump in revenue. With many are only operating at 50 percent capacity, these opulent venues for sing song are just no longer profitable and will probably continue to fade into obscurity over the next decade.

Film Director Wang Quan'an Nabbed for Soliciting Sex
Famous for films like Tuya's Wedding (2006 winner of Golden Bear Prize) and the historical drama White Deer Plain, director Wang Quan'an has been detained by Beijing police on charges of soliciting sex. He was caught in the company of a sex worker in Dongcheng district on September 10. Authorities reported that he had used the service for three nights in a row, paying RMB 800 for each visit.

, son of action star Jackie Chan, was officially arrested Wednesday on suspicion of harboring and allowing the use of drugs in his Beijing home.

The Dongcheng District prosecutor's office made the announcement on Sina Weibo Wednesday morning. From here, police will continue to investigate and decide if they should charge him for his alleged 100g stash and use of marijuana.
