Watch History Tonight: Beijing Guo'an vs. Beijing BG in the First City Derby Ever
Beijing Guo'an will meet with Beijing BG in the Chinese FA Cup round-of-16 knockout tonight at 7.30pm. The game will be a milestone in the history of Beijing sports – dubbed by various media as "the Capital Derby I," it will be the first competitive match ever played between two Beijing football clubs at professional level.
Guo'an will play "away" at the Beijing Olympic Sports Center, Beijing BG's home stadium. The last game played between two Beijing-based football clubs was a friendly 15 years ago between Beijing Guo'an and Beijing Kuanli, the latter team since becoming extinct after it was sold by the owner following relegation to the third division in 2002.
Three players of the two sides played in the match 15 years ago, Xu Yunlong and Shao Jiayi of Guo'an and Wang Cun of BG. Regarded as one of the greatest Beijing footballers of all time, "Captain Dragon" Xu Yunlong has spent all of his 16 professional seasons with Guo'an. He currently holds the record of most appearances in China's top division: 393.
Currently ranked the fifth in the second division, Beijing BG comes to the round of 16 after a hard-earned 1-0 home win against first division team Shijianzhuang Yongchang, while Guo'an passed the third round with a 2-1 away win against Shenzhen.
Beijing BG was founded as Beijing Baxy F.C. in 2004 as an amateur club by former Guo'an player Guo Weiwei. In 2009 the team turned professional after it was approved to play in the third and lowest division of China's professional football league. In 2010, the team took over Beijing Hongdeng which struggling financially at the time and active in the second division. The team has since seen tremendous improvement in the second division over the past two years, finishing seventh place in 2013 and the fourth place in 2014.
Beijing BG is just as local as Guo'an is, if not more. The team has been sponsored by local ice cream producer Baxi since its establishment in 2004 and Guo Weiwei, the club's chairman and co-founder, is a Beijing native and former Guo'an player, and the team's current manager, Aleksander Stanojevic, was the manager of Guo'an between 2013 and 2014. Due to its special importance, the game is likely to be a huge coming together of generations of Beijing footballers and sports celebrities.
Unlike football derbies in European countries, which often come with intense rivalries between the teams, there is yet an established antagonism between Guo'an and BG. Though being the underdog, BG's manager Stanojevic told the Beijing Morning Post that he "still plans to stick with an offensive mind set." Whether he means it or it is just part of his pre-game mind games has yet to be seen.
If the two teams happen to tie, the knockout game will be settled by penalty shootouts right after regular time. The game will be televised by BeijingTV Sports and sina.com. Catch it at bars around town or at the Olympic Sports Center.

This is not the "first competitive match ever played between two Beijing football clubs at professional level", Beijing BG/Baxy plays B.I.T two times each year for the past few years in China League One (they've even met in the CFA Cup before). Of course there was also the season that Liaoning FC moved to Beijing and halfway through the season became Beijing Sanyuan, facing off against Guoan in Jia A.
There is no rivalry between Guoan and BG because BG only gets 2,000 fans or so per match and most of those are, first and foremost, Guoan fans.
Yes it is.
1) Beijing GB/Baxy did play agaisnt B.I.T. a few times each year in division two but B.I.T. is a college team. B.I.T. is the acronym of Beijing Institute of Technology. It plays in the second division of the professional league but all players of the team are enrolled in Beijing Institute of Technology. They are student players, not professional. These players are 100% real students; they go to training after classes for about 2 hours/day. Those games were more like UNC Chapel Hill vs. Charlotte Bobcats, and you don't call it a "derby at professional level".
2) Liaoning FC moved to play in Beijing for half year---yes, but that's was under a very bizzare circumstance. It was not a resettling decision; rather, it was simply a temporary deal to have the Liaoning team to play in Beijing. Liaoning was struggling financially that year, and their sponsors Beijing Sanyuan and Buodao Cellphone asked them to play in Beijing, and Liaoning FC had to agree otherwise the team would be broke. The whole Liaoning team reamined untouched, and it was not a long term deal---they went back to Liaoning a year later.
If I remember correctly, the Liaoning team even refused to be called Beijing Sanyuan, and it had never been recognized as a Beijing team, neither by Beijingers, nor by Liaoningers.
This is the Beijing Evening News of April 4, 2003, titled, "辽宁队冠名北京三元激起反响 辽足协要“打官司”, roughly translated to "Liaoning FC is bringing a lawsuit, refusing to be renamed Beijing Sanyuan." The team is referred by the most influential local newspaper as 辽宁队 in the title of a story. How could that possibly be if the team was recognized as a Beijing team?
Almost all major national and local media regard the upcoming game as the first Beijing Derby.
