Skip the Surf and Stick with Turf at Morton's This Summer

Juicy steaks, flakey salmon, fluffy mashed potatoes and tart key lime pie – these are but a few of the delicious indulgences on offer at Morton’s of Chicago this summer.

Available from July 18 to August 12 (with the exception of Chinese Valentine's Day August 9), this decadent range of dishes, priced at RMB 488 for a set (plus a 15 percent service charge) are a perfect summer treat for couples craving a tasty romantic dinner, or small parties looking to delve into a lavish American-style feast. While that price tag might seem exorbitant to some Beijingers, it should be noted that Morton's usually charges double for such set menus, making this set a special opportunity for local foodies that are longing to indulge.

The esteemed chain – whose Beijing branch is housed in the Regent Hotel next to Line 5’s Dengshikou subway station – is known worldwide for its surf and turf. During a recent visit we chose the newly available honey-balsamic glazed salmon from the main course options, which also include the chicken Christopher, the shrimp scampi Capellini, and of course the 6oz filet mignon.

While the salmon is a fine choice for a muggy July evening thanks to its buoyant light texture zesty sweet glaze, it somewhat pales in comparison to Morton’s true asset, its beef. That the 6oz filet mignon is such a tenderly succulent cut – one of Beijing’s absolute finest – that we have to recommend it over all its menu counterparts.

Likewise, the chopped spinach salad is a clear standout from its other leafy menu brethren which include a tomato and mozzarella salad, the Morton’s signature salad, and a standard Caesar salad. The spinach option’s mildly refreshing flavour makes it an invigorating and unusual starter, especially in comparison to this menu’s other sturdy, but somewhat unspectacular salad choices.

The dessert menu is more evenly stacked. A gargantuan, billowing soufflé, creamy chocolate mousse and sharply tart key lime pie are all on offer, and they’re all spectacular. The soufflé wins on an aesthetic level, looking akin to a mushroom cloud of deliciousness set to envelop your entire palate. But we may be most partial of all to the key lime pie, because it is such a wholesome rarity in Beijing and because its enticingly bitter-sweet flavor makes it a truly decadent taste of home.

While you can’t go wrong with any of the options on this menu, we do hope that our recommendations will help you make the absolute most of Morton’s astounding new summer entry.
